Drummond oddities

I found this on eBay and was curious as there was a spring on the main drive control does anyone know what this is for and what it does please?

I have never had a drummond but my guess is that when you press the lever left the feed activated and that latch mechanism falls over the lever locking it in the engaged position. Once the saddle reaches a certain point a metal bar that has since fallen off the saddle would then poke the top of the latch and release the lever so that the spring pulls it into the disengaged position. Would allow for accurate repeated cuts and reduce the risk of crashing the carriage.

Yes home brewed auto knock off,…. auto disengage came as standard on M types

Have you seen this thread? Photos of the approved machine half way down, although the one in the thread has been extensively modified by the looks of it.

There appears to be a pair of drilled and tapped holes added to the top of the cross slide for some sort of actuating rod to be attached to. Probably something like the below pic from another ebay ad. Must have been a popular mod in the day.

The one you posted looks like a pretty nice clean machine. Nice pile of changegears with it, which are probably worth as much as the lathe itself!

Yep I have one hopper but didn't have this adaption on mine your looks pretty much nicer mod to shut of feed

Yes Muzzer my B type has had a lot of changes at least 50 years ago it came like it to me in that link post you posted and had been in storage about 50 years before i got it . It has a different slide and a different gear banjo which looks much stronger.

Well your not alone , you me and a few others have had trouble with the yahpoo site !!

The original gear banjo dosnt suffer from any strength problems, its the boss cast integral with the lathe bed that the banjo fits onto that`s the  weak point, the outside edge of the boss breaks away . This happens because of either, [a] the locking bolt is not withdrawn far enough to clear the grove machined in the boss, so it get tap to help it along !! or [b] or original bolt which has a plain bit on the end that fits in the grove gets lost so whatever bolt fits gets used, but no plain end then gets over tightened which causes outer edge of boss to break away!! take look at the post Drummond pre-B type lathe ( 1/4 scale ) if you down load first pic you can then enlarge it and see broken boss the banjo fits on……………..b

The nice thing about the one in Hoppers pic is its not been over chucked, a 3 inch chuck is about the head stock bearings limit.

Modz to my gears on my Drummond B type to cover them from ML4 covers . I had no idea what and how they fitted but had a bash. Dont have the witworth bolts yet hence why bolt is sticking out as they are on order.

hope so to bodge. No motor attached to mine as still awaiting to hear what the idiots who sold it do before i take them to court. So chuck key is safe its how i rotate chuck to keep it lubricated.

That guy is selling what looks like a good M series longbed, offering postage too, countershaft and various bits 'n bobs etc, a rare chance at a very decent Drummond starter kit.

Yes, very nice pile of accessories etc and the lathe looks in well kept shape too. I can't believe how cheap these old beauties sell for in the UK. If only the shipping were not so prohibitive to the colonies.

A Drummond metal muncher from 1914, wow

The countershaft system looks "unusual" to this hobbyist (in other words I don't understand it but I'm sure it works)

A few possibly original bits from a long time ago too, a nice new motor to run it and a 1 inch spindle bore (drool drool drool)

Nice work Nobby, have one spare too I had to take it of to fit the tumbler I have.

Fixed my ML10 mount onto the bottom Drummond saddle not very elegant yet but suffices to take up the distance giving me a new amount .

Now have a smaller amount to remove
