Is there a list somewhere of drawing errors in the Martin Evan’s designs – specifically 31/2″ William? Or has anyone building William found the following.
After much measuring and puzzling I have found that the overall width of the running boards are dimensioned incorrectly. They should be 2 1/32″ not 1 7/8″
With my dimension it all fits perfectly.
My ignorance of full size trains means I don’t know what the function is of the 2 ‘horn pieces’ that sweeps down in front of the leading wheels. Is this to knock debris off the line? In photos of William it seems to be attached to the frame and then double bend to line up with the centre of each line.
In the drawings they appear to be drawn as an extension of the running board outer stiffener strip, which can’t be right.

Hi Tony, I don’t know about the dimensions or the design of the model, but the two horn piece you mention are called gaurd irons. There should be a pair at the back as well, and yes they are to stop small items derailing the locomotive.

          Regards Nick.
