        Hello,

I have bought a set of 4 drain cocks, 2 LH 2 RH. They all look the same to me…..what is the difference?

They have 1/4″ x 40TPI to go into the cylinder body and on the other end 3/16″ x 40TPI with a cone and nut…where do these go????

        Any help gladly received!!

        Many thanks,

        Stirling.

Cylinder drain cocks are not usually handed, drain cocks for water gauges are handed
the cone and nut are for the drain pipes

They are if they have a 90 degree rotation stop on the back.

The drain cocks should be mounted on each end of the steam chest to discharge any water that may be in the cylinder.

Water does not compress like steam and if the piston cannot reach full stroke will blow the end off the steam chest or bend a piston rod or crank shaft.

This drawing of a Stuart Turner S9 cylinder shows where the drain cocks go, this is a mill type engine, but they go in the same place on a vertical engine.  There are actually two positions for the cocks, either directly opposite the steam chest, or at 90* to that, which would place them under the cylinder on the horizontal S9.

Drain cocks for locos are handed so that the operating levers can be outside, but both work on pull (or push)
