I continue to restor a DSG 17T tool room lathe. See figure. It was ordered with a Crawford `collet chuck and 29 collets. The Camlock on the lathe is D1-8. I have found on ebay a D1-8 Crawford Collet chuck. Can anyone tell me what size or type of Crawford Collets I need please.

Well … The fact that the bore sizes go up to 2” should certainly limit the choice !

Beyond that: Sorry, I have no idea

Crawford made lots of types of collet. I do not know if this has the same information as the linked album above: http://www.lathes.co.uk/crawford-collets/

Just because the lathe was supplied with a Crawford chuck on a D1-8 fitting does not necessarily mean it will be the same one that was supplied by the OEM.

Why not ask the eBay seller what collets the chuck takes?

The prices on the Order Book are revealing. £2680 in 1956 is equivalent to £80,000 in today's money!

DSG were the Rolls Royce of British lathes and hobbyists are privileged to own them now. I doubt a Model Engineer ever owned a new one.

The lathe resided in Middlesborough Technical COllege for its whole life, and I was lucky to get it (by way of a dealer) from there. I am not too fussed about the grip range of the collets but obviously they need to fit the chuck.

                    .

The reason for mentioning it was simply that it will ‘inform’ the body diameter of the originally-supplied model of collet … and even in Crawford’s old catalogues, I doubt there were many to choose from.

If you have a different chuck, then all bets are off.

Perhaps I have misled you Michael, – all I want is collets to fit the chuck and the chuck to fit the lathe D1-8 Camlock. I have given up trying to replace things exactly as was. This is a chuck that would seem to fit the lathe. I have emailed them to ask if they have a serial number or collets to suit. How I get the 14" 4 jaw thast on there is a different matter.

Whilst all of the catalogies mention a vast range of old British lathes (Herbert, CVA etc) they dont mention DSG.

Cap, without knowing which exact Crawford chuck you have bought/seen it is impossible to say which type of their collets will fit it. As DC3 says, find out from the seller what specific chuck it is and that should tell you what collets it takes.

Bit like saying I've seen an ER chuck what collets fit it? Could be one of several sizes

                          .

That’s comparatively easy then … You want Multibore collets, which only come in one [outer] size

Hi Jason theres a link to the holder in my previous post. I have asked them for more info but Have just realised its a Burnerd (or the say it is) holder. I chose it becuase its the only D1-8 I could find. I will keep hunting for someone selling a D1-8 collet chuck and collets.

Jason's urge for caution was well made. The one to which you link is a Burnerd chuck. As the listing says, it takes Burnerd EC collets. Rotagrip have details of the collets in their online reference information. EC goes from 1/16" up to 1 1/2" and the equivalent in metric. The ones in this listing are the correct ones for the chuck: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115577885742

If you buy a Burnerd chuck of this style, be sure to confimr that the key is included. It looks like a large Jacob's key, but is a slightly different shape and difficult to find as a spare part or to make.

Burnerd did make an ED size, which is larger, but they are very rare, EC being the most common.

Many thanks DC31k. That ebay link look just the ticket. I would need a D1-8 backplate presumably. Does anyone know how the collet chuck mounts to the backplate, – looks very much like it is a threaded mount.

The one to which you originally linked, sold by homeandworkshopmachinery, is a chuck with integral backplate, a one piece construction. No backplate needed.

The one in your photo above is for an L-series taper not the D1-8 Camlock that you have. It will not fit your machine. I linked to it merely to show the collets. I did not realise he was selling the chuck as well, so sorry if that has lead you astray. His price is very good for both chuck and collets.

For sure, the chucks were made with integral D-taper, integral L-taper and in a backplate-mounted version. There may also have been other mounts.

If you are interested in this style of chuck, please read the literature available on the Rotagrip and Pratt Burnerd America sites.
