      Hi guys

I've been clearing a friends old workshop after he sadly passed away. We have found a fully working Colchester Student 6" Lathe complete will all machining tools and manuals. We are at a loss to do with it, we feel the best bet would be to try and find someone who could put it to good use. We are wondering if anybody out there has any ideas on how to get us started. I appreciate any reply.

      Chris

What town and province/shire/county are you in, what country? I am sure there will be someone here than can help, but location will matter.

            Hi Chris,

Sad times aren't they? Sorry about losing your friend.

As for the lathe – I doubt you'll find it difficult to get rid of. Colchester lathes are very popular. The value depends on condition and accessories. If it has a number of good chucks and/or steadies they alone can be quite valuable. Beware of people who want to 'come and look' then try to cherry-pick those high-value parts leaving you with the hard to shift lathe itself. Even some small tools can have significant value which might not be apparent to the uninitiated.

If you want appraisal advice, put some pics up. This site has a classified section and there are several other good ones.

There are a number of different models so some pictures might help, or have a look at this site to help identify it. There are two other pages for covering this lathe if you don't immediately identify it.
If you are new to lathes then it might be an idea to contact the local Model Engineering society for advice as to which bits go with it as where there is a lathe there are usually a lot of other tools.

                    Hi Chris

I live in Southampton and could give you an idea of possible values. Obviously, meeting up would not be advisable at present! I will send you a private message with my contact details.

Sorry to hear about your friend. It is always sad to go and clear up a friend's belongings!

It would be great if you could possibly scan the manuals and post these on the Colchester group on groups.io. There is not much printed info available on the older Mk1's.

If you look at the serial number stamped into the tailstock end of the bed, then I can let you know what model it is which will assist you in selling it.

                      Serial number

As the man said "Beware of cherry pickers "

Try to sell it "As seen, in one lot"

                        Anyone really interested will understand.
