I realise that this must be 'old hat' for many but my first clock TICKS. Lots to do before it is finished but I'm 'quietly' pleased.

It's not 'old hat' to me! It must be really nice to hear the first tick-tock of the clock. Making a clock is on my 'to do' list

It has been a pleasant journey and a privilege to work with you.

I should add that were it not for all the help I got from members of this forum commencing in about 2010, I'd have little if anything to contribute.

Nice work Mr N ! And some interesting details there, in particular the pendulum 'hanging by a thread'. I haven't seen this before but might have read about such things. While this 'might' have some advantages over something more conventional, I'm wondering if the thread material is reliable in terms of fatigue. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

Hello Gerry, that's not just 'thread' that's 'silk thread' !!

It seems that the idea comes from old french clocks. The odd idea appealed to me so I used it.

The thread is suspended from a screw at the top which can turn to adjust the length of swing for fine adjustments.

As for fatigue, I'll let you know!

I assume that this is the 'Wilding' version of the large wheel skeleton clock, which did indeed have french beginnings. Several members of Epping Forest Horology Club have made it and one of the last people to do so used a rayon filament to set up the finished clock, which would run for about 4 to 5 days. After completely dissassembly no faults or reasons for the poor endurance could be discerned……..

However, after replacing the rayon filament with finest silk embroidery thread the run time suddenly became 12 days!….just one of those fascinating little happenings that keeps horology so seductive for us clock builders.

Thus 'seduced' by the idea that the finest silk resolved the problem attributed to rayon , would anyone in the EFHC care to repeat the test with rayon (filament), thus dispelling my thoughts that some other effect might have fixed the endurance issue?

                                                    Just curious, Bob.  cheeky

Personally, I would be concerned for the longevity of rayon versus silk in terms of environmental factors, none the least being UV.

Here in Australia we have lots of it scattered around. Don't ask me how I know.
