I have been offered a 3" scale Burrell to the Plastow design and the seller tells me it needs a new clack valve. I don't want to sound stupid but could someone explain to me what it is and what it does.

A clack valve is basically a non return valve. You will have two on the engine one on the water feed to the boiler from the pump and another on the feed from the injector. They stop the boiler pressure blowing the water back down the pipe and also any steam from leaving the boiler where you don't want it to.

In this photo of my 3" the pump clack valve can clearly be seen just to the left of the flywheel

              Harry,

Is that photographic distortion or is the wood bending badly under the weight of your TE?
