      John,

Nice clip, but did you tell us the make of the tool? (I could have missed it). It was a demo like this at a Myford show which convinced me of the merits of the Q-cut type tool, which is similar but bit smaller. The vital bit – and people often miss this if they haven't used one – is the special chip-scrunching design of the tool top, reduces swarf snarl-ups to zero.

        Hi Guys,

I think this shows quite nicely that there is NO one way to part off. If one system works for an individual but not others, could it be that it is the operator that causes problems? I know we all look for the magic way of doing things, myself included, but learning to use the kit we already have, instead of running off looking for someone else's miracle, might be a good philosophy.

A wise old wood turner once wrote" always cut wood the way she likes to be cut" the same applies to metal, when parting, a little front clearance and a little top rake and the metal will peel away, the rest is fine detail. As with most things, first principles teach us a lot.

          John,

Thanks, must have missed that – or not understood it.
