Annealing HSS

I come to this very late, and quite ignorant … but my suggestion would be to just ‘bite the bullet ‘

1. remove the bulk of the material by whatever rough grinding process you can contrive.
2. turn the spigot to size using whatever exotic insert might be required.

I don’t know the magic numbers, but I do know that Thornton’s lovely HSS horological cutters are turned to shape.

That’s what I ended up doing. I actually came as far as bolting the angle grinder in the tool post before a foreman blew a gasket and had the boss shut us down. Fine by me, he’s the one paying for the inserts  😉

I came as far as roughing it out with an angle grinder before I had to do other work (it’s a side project). And before I could finish it we had another meeting and got a green light after all. So now we have a toolpost grinder 🙂

Impressive isn’t it? But it works better than it should.
