Thanks to all for replies (too many to mention individually) to my question, but especially to Hopper for taking the time to write a detailed guide (which I shall store for future reference) and to John Stevenson for his generous offer of practical help.
It was indeed to do with my ineptitude in tool grinding – the non-standard thread I was trying to make is 5/8 x 4tpi ACME stub profile, so quite a steep helix angle, and I hadn't put enough side rake on, and probably ground the tool too sharp . It's sorted now – John reground my attempt at a cutter, and it works fine now. I've learned some stuff from this experience, and apologies to anyone who feels I've been banging on about it too much.
Regards, Robin.
