Spent last week in Kent, chauffeuring Herself around English Heritage & National Trust locations (anything for a quiet life). We also (of course) have to check that all the shopping centres we visit are exactly the same (which they invariably are).
However, I now have a new way of entertaining myself on these occasions, by checking the local WH Smith for copies of the MEW "Special".
I'm pleased to report that (as of last week) there were still copies available in WHS Dover, Deal & the one at that very large retail park just outside Ramsgate.
The 'Secret' Tunnels underneath Dover Castle were interesting and worth a visit. There is an audio-visual presentation of how very close we came to joining the previous attempt at European Union (apparently they called it the "Third Reich" back then). Three Hundred and Fifty Eight thousand men of the BEF evacuated (under fire) from the beaches at Dunkirk in just ten days. The rescue was controlled from the Dover Castle tunnels. We lost many men and ships in the process, including 22 Destroyers, which is more than the total number of Destroyers and Frigates in todays RN. Which was quite a sobering thought.
