      Hi All,

Today I was running the loco on air. It was running quite well. While running it through the full forward and reverse gear. I decided to measure up for the right hand water tank. As per the plans the bottom of the water tank sit 3/4" above the top of the frames. Low and behold the top of the lifting / reversing arm is obstructed by the bottom of the water tanks by 3/16"

So do I lift the water tank by 3/16" of do I remake the lifting/reversing arm with a throw 3/16" shorter than the designed 15/8" ????

Can you put a 'hidden' bulge in the bottom of the tank? I will be making my tanks next month, so I will be following this thread. Tomorrow, I will have a measure up of my link and see if I have the same problem. Have you made your front "RSJ" tank support beam, and if so, How did you make it?

            Hi Bob,

I made the girder this morning. I machined it out of 15mm square black steel. Squared it off to approx.12mm then ran a 5/16" slot drill in 4.5mm both sides to form the H beam. Very pleased with the result, that's more that I can say for Speedy as a whole.

As for putting a "hidden" bulge into the bottom of the water tank that is not practical as the lifting arm rises quite close to the outer edge of the tank.

              Good Day Peter

I have done some measurements on my Speedy and the top of the tank supports are 7/8 inch above the frames. The only part of the Valve Gear that extends above the Gear Frame is the reverser arm and as you know it is at it's highest in neutral. In my Locomotive the reversing lever / arm fitting is in conflict with the Tanks by 1/8 inch, were it not for the bend radius of the bottom outside of the tank. This bend radius gives it a clearance of that and an additional 1/8 inch.

Just measured my SPEEDY under construction, The top of the reversing arm is 7/8" above the top of the frames and looking at drawing 2A (D.Youngs mods) and the original drg 3, that is correct to drawing. If I scale off drawings 8 and 9, The tank stands 3/4" above the frame – giving 1/8" fouling on the arm itself. Yes, the outer leaf of the arm may just clear on the radius of the bottom of the tank, but by drawing, the inner leaf of the reversing arm would still foul. From what Phil has said, it looks like his tank support is not to drawing, but a workable solution. Would Phil mind checking out the depth of his tanks, because if the tank is raised by 1/8", then it would give problems at the cab end as the top of the tank would be level with the top of the boiler I think.

Bit the bullet this morning. removed the reversing arm, made a 3/16" pin to go through the original fulcrum hole. Silver soldered the pin in place. Drilled and reamed a new hole approx. 1/8" shorter than designed. Shaped the arm back to the correct profile. Now back on the Loco everything Hunky Dory. I know the throw on the gears will now be slightly shorter, but I was not going down the path of lifting the water tank supports.

Peter, so long as the reversing link between your new arm and the sector lever doesn't foul anything, I can't see a problem. It would be interesting to know how other SPEEDY's overcame this though.
Whilst thinking about tanks, I was going to include a balance pipe between the two with a drain down valve to empty them at the end of the day/season.

                      Bob & Peter

As requested I have measured my tanks as they are removed at this time for some maintenance to the chassis. Both tanks measure exactly 4 5/8 inches from outside top to outside bottom.

As for Bob's post, the two tanks are connected by a balance pipe which is a piece of Heater Hose onto a 3 inch long pipes coming out of the bottom of each tank. It is press fit on to the short pipes which are built up with heat shrink to allow a tight leak free fit. These two pipes are located 9 ½ inches from the front of the tanks, and the drain is located 1 inch farther aft on the RH tank. It all works very well.

I can't figure out how to include a picture of the loco with the tanks in place so that you can see how they fit, but I will work on it. It says my browser will not allow access to my pictures.

                      Cheers

                      Phil

I have just checked the drawings, and Phil's tanks are to drawing (4 5/8" deep). I hope he will work out a way of getting us a photo of the tanks in place. I am interested at seeing the height of the tanks at the cab end of the boiler.

After a small mod to the lifting/reverse arm on the RHS, making the reversing rod and fitting to the reversing lever, I note that there is hardly clearance (1/16&quot between the RHS of the boiler and the reversing lever. Anyone else got this on their SPEEDY?
