I may well be in need of a new lead screw for the above. Many years ago, there was a company that manufactured lead screws, does that or a similar company still exist?

I appreciate that a new lead screw, if available, would be an expensive item. However I would rather buy a new one than pay around £70 for a second hand one, from the Bay. You never know what you are getting!

You can buy a new leadscrew from Myfords , £120 for the 5/8" diam or £134 for he 3/4" diam.

Have you considered doing the required machining and reversing the existing one? It only involves fairly simple work; turning, boring, sleeves, pins and locktite.

That way you'd move the majority of the wear to where it isn't used and even if you do use that end you'll usually be using the side of the thread with least wear to drive the half-nuts,

You can buy lengths of Acme threaded bar leadscrew from industrial suppliers and cut it to fit your lathe, but you will need a bigger machine than yours to form the ends.

Hello Ian,

"Myfords" 5/8" lead screw is for theML7 with a gearbox. My ML7 is the one with change wheels Correct me if I am wrong, but the Myford one will not fit my lathe?

Nick that is a smart idea, I didn't realise that it could be done. I shall take a close look and see if I can sort out what needs to be done.

Dennis, that was exactly what I was on the lookout for. When I Googled lead screw manufacturers, I came up with loads of people doing small lead screws for CNC work (I presume). Can you give me a lead to a supplier of ACME threaded bar.My pal has a large Chinese lathe , so machining it up should be no problem.

There you go! I still need some education on how best to use Google! My memory is not as good as it was (the kids think I am in the first stages of dementia!). Kingston rings a bell, I do believe it was the company that I looked at 30 years ago!
