      Hi all

I have been working on my Rob Roy rolling chassis making the few parts that the previous owner never got around to doing. While checking the cylinders and steam chests I noticed that there are no gaskets fitted. Is this normal for this engine to have no gaskets. The parts seem very well machined so was wondering if perhaps they are not required.

      Advice please. Mike

I would venture to suggest that however well machined metal to metal is going to leak steam. When I built my RobRoy I made the first set of gaskets from oiled brown paper.

After some years I and several strip downs I will admit they were becoming a bit tatty and I made a new set from a thin commercial gasket material. I can't remember the name or the manufacturer of this material, but I do recall I purchased it from a motor factors. Over thirty years later it is still the same set of gaskets and they don't leak, well they didn't last time I steamed it!

Mine has gaskets. Maybe the original builder planned to fit them once the valve setting was complete.

The drawings of model steam locos never show gaskets and even in the build write ups, rarely mention the use of gaskets.

I think they should give beginners a clue, especially beginner focused loco designs

Many thanks for advice, hoping to get away without them , but gaskets it is.
