Can somebody offer some words of wisdom in the design considerations for selecting the type of slide bars used in steam locomotives, namely the alligator deign as used by the GWR and some of the smaller BR Standards viz the triple surface overhead arrangement as used on the LNER and the larger BR Standards. Would it be correct to say that the alligator design was the preferred option for tank engine design when duty cycles required equal running in both directions and the overhead design used for passenger locomotives when running was predominantly in the forward direction?
