I have just bought some stainless steel 5mm shaft and its not round, put in the triple plain bearings and it catches as it is turned.
Measuring it shows a slight ovality but its hard to measure.
Does anyone know of where I can get precision ground 5mm st steel shaft?
I have looked at HPC but no luck there.

You could look at the CNC parts suppliers as they offer stainless for the linear bearing shafts. The only thing is it’s very hard but is machineable with carbide tipped tooling

Its a common problem with center less grinding and needs a mic with a vee anvill to detect as it can measure the same at any position with a std mic.

              See here.

              And here

You might be able to detect in raw stock by rotating in a vee block with DTI mtd.

                    Hi Clive ,

Please note that while 5 mm ground bar is available from several stockists its is only actually manufactured in a very few places . I and others have had the experience recently of chasing similar requirements and ending up with more and more samples of the same dud material after each enquiry .

Personally if the length needed is not impossibly great I always prefer now to make my own acurate bar from next size up .

btw how out of round…guess enough to foul

We used to use “gauges” with tenth micron resolution with centerless grinding looked round on them but wouldn’t turn between mic anvils.

Is this condition described as obround?
