      Hi Guys,

I am a long time lurker first time poster. I have just taken the plunge and bought my self an almost grown up lathe (my first was a Unimat 1 ), it is a Combi-218 Unimat 4 type clone.

I plumped for it because I have hardly any space for a workshop at the moment, and it came with the dreaded integrated mill/drill head (it also had a 300W motor).

However I seem to be stumbling at the first hurdle. I have been unable to work out how to set up the drive belts on the machine. It has a number of belts included (and I bought an extra set on the recommendation of the sales guy). However none of them seem to fit or have any traction on the pulleys.

I cant see anything in the manual, which seems to over look the belts completely, and the machine doesn’t seem to be very well documented on the net.

I have taken a few photo’s below which I hope show the problem. I can’t seem to find any specs anywhere for what the belt sizes I should have are.

Im guessing I missing some vital piece of the setup puzzle.

Thanks your help, and sorry for the ramble, Ive been starting at this all day and its been bugging me something rotten

How many grooves are there on the Big pully top left?

From my Unimat 3 days you either drive from the motor to the top left pully and from there to the spindle or you can drive straight from the motor to the spindle. The belts also needed quite a stretch to get them on.

EDIT it is not exactly a Unimat 4 clone as the pullys are al different . If you want to see how the Unimat 4 is geared look at this

Thank you Jason for your help.

I wish the manual I had got was as detailed as the unimat 4 one! Guess that’s why there still so sort after on eBay.

Fingers crossed They don’t snap to often!

              Hi There
              Try using o-rings.
Availble for pence from your local bearing supplier.
They need to be very tight.
              No, tighter than that.
              regards David

                Hi Jason Mc.,

Go back to your supplier and ask him. Information like that you have paid him for already.

                Good luck.

                Peter.
