Over the last few weeks, when I attempt to use the forum's (third party) spelling checker, it seems to check spelling, but get stuck on loading spelling suggestions for my idiosyncratic use of the Queen's English. Does MyTimeMedia need to update a subscripstion or is something else amiss?

I've tried it on my desktop machine, that I had to 'side-grade' from Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition(!!!) to Win 10 Pro and the household domain controller that's running Win server 2012. Both with current versions of Firefox.

I can't work out what's broken, even though I used to earn my keep doing IT. crying

Me too, also Firefox. Incorrectly spelt words are underlined in red, but then the suggestions get stuck 'loading'

I like the suggestion it's an unpaid subscription: just noticed the spell-check pop-up window includes: 'Purchase Cloud/Server WebSpellChecker to remove this banner ad!'

I'm wary of using the forum spellchecker on long posts because it's crashed the session a few of times. Serves me right for waffling…

Plus one on the awful spell checker. Can we not get a proper one?

Don’t be too hard on yourself Dave, unlike some on here your waffle is normally worth reading. laugh

On the subject though, my iPad auto corrects words as I type on here or offers suggestions. It’s not perfect but it is pretty good. I’m using Safari.

                Works here.

But I use a spell checker plugin in my browser because that works across all the sites I use.

Try <ctrl>- right click if you get stuck.

I am using Firefox under Win7 and have never been able to get the forum spell check (ie "ABC" button above) to do anything.

It really works, I used to use it before installing the British English Dictionary in Firefox (I think you have to search add-ons for dictionary, but it may load automatically these days).

The VAST majority of online editors don't offer a spell checker these days as browser based ones are so ubiquitous these days./ Plus it means you don't need a personal dictionary in your cookie for each site (deleting your cookie will destroy your dictionary unless it is huge and gets transferred to the server).

My advice is to think of it as a redundant throwback and set up your browser to spellcheck instead.

In which case It might be a good idea to remove the links for the third party spelling checker, because that appears to have expired:-

Why not just use a standard word processing program to compile the text and then copy and paste it in?

                            Regards

One reason to be a little careful with word processing programs is that the post can end up much bigger than expected and/or contain format instructions (like tables) that the forum can't cope with. The forum is a delicate little flower – not unusual to see posts with content escaping out of the box into the adverts, or strange characters, or missing bits.

A way of unexpectedly increasing the size of a post with a Word Processor is to type in a font not already known to the forum. If a 'new' font is used, its definition is added silently to the plain text typed by the user. Not a problem unless the font definition, which has priority over anything the user types, causes the maximum post character count to be exceeded. There are other bloat possibilities – word processors are full of smart features, some going well beyond what a web-site editor might understand.

Rather than background editing for the forum with a word processor it's safer to use a Text Editor because they don't do any fancy formatting. What's pasted onto the forum from a text editor is automatically limited to bog-standard plain text, and very unlikely to cause a problem.

All the user has to do is install a text editor, switch on the spell-checker, and learn how to use it. Not everyone will wish to follow this advice! It's a right bother compared with having a built-in spell-checker that works. Nothing is ever easy…

Hi, I just use the voice search on my Nook tablet or on my mobile, whenever I get a spelling wrong that I can't correct mentally, these both give a definition of the word, so you know if you have the correct spelling for the word you are wishing to put right.

                                Regards Nick.

Win 10, Chrome, works fine. Clunky though – you have to ctrl+right click on the red-underlined word to bring up the alternate spellings, unlike every other spell checker I've encountered. Also worked fine under Win7 and with Firefox.

I'm not sure why everyone says the spell checker is broken.

It works in Firefox (when you have no dictionary installed) and it works in Edge – I have just tested it.

Most people with problems seem to be using an older OS, like W7.

Does not work on W10 with Chrome or Edge, it says the suggestions are loading but they never do. Though Edge Auto corrects some words.

Ah I see. It's only if you click 'check spelling' – I've always used the right click on red squiggled words which works fine. I've never seen that screen before.

OK, I suggest right clicking rather than using check spelling.

                                              I'll ask what is happening.

Neil one thing I don't get is all the options in the drop down, the ones marked red are just pale grey on my screen, could it be drawing info from your other spell checker. It used to work on mine but can't remember when I last used it.

                                                I don't use edge either.
