I'm beginning to get irritated by the number of folks on here not using the Link button. Come on guys you've already copied the URL so all you need to do is click the Link button – third from the left on the bottom row next to YouTube – then just paste the URL into the box, easy.

Probably in the armchair uising the i-pad which makes it harder than using a mouse on a desktop..

Exactly Jason. Just click on the link rather than copying and pasting. The button is there for everyone's convenience, providing you know how to use it. There are over a billion tablet users now, or don't they count?

In firefox if you highlight a dead link, then right click it, an "open link in new tab" option appears

I use an iPad for a lot of things these days, it gets taken about and I can even check my CCTV on it when away from home. (Fully functional in the workshop too), as a bonus it does not get hot when used in an armchair either!.

Putting a website link on here using the button is rarely a problem.

Sorry still don't get it. I'm using a Win7 laptop & Chrome. I click on the link button, it gives me the opportunity to paste in a link. I have to copy a link, so I might as well paste the link directly into the window, rather than pasting it into the box the link button throws up.

Regardless of how I set the link up, it's still just a click for the person reading the post, so I don't see why it irritates folks if I don't use the link button?

Don't understand the comments about iPads – is the link button to make life easier for iPad users?

I'm feeling exceptionally dumb this morning

If you are referring to Jason's remark … the clue is probably in he fact that he equates iPad with Armchair, and rarely misses an opportunity to have a dig. [see his public profile]

On a more practical level; it's worth remembering that not all pasted URLs are automatically hyperlinked by the forum software.

My comment was more that I find it easier to do using a desktop than the i-pad, but I don't use the i-pad much. I do believe that using the youtube button makes things easier for ipad users which again a lot of people don't use.

As Michael says sometimes if you paste the url into your post it is not clickable, see Ady1's post above.

Myself I would rather someone felt they could post a useful link in whatever form they can manage than be put off from posting the link. Its a bit like spelling, I'd rather someone posted than felt they should keep quiet as some members like to moan about grammar etc. (Not aimed at you MG)

On my laptop with Firefox http://www.google.co.uk, for example needs highlighting before it will be picked up as a link- not always easy to do using a touch screen or touch pad. Whereas using the insert link: http://www.google.co.uk or Google is just a single click. I think it makes the forum software decide if it's a link rather than the vagaries of the particular browser you are using

I have to say that this is the only forum I use that doesn't automatically provide a hot link. Any URL pasted into any of the other forums I use becomes clickable, or in the case of a tablet "touchable" !

Hi, if I remember correctly, there once wasn't a link button to use and when long URL's were used, it very often made the text run under the adds on the R/H side. My understanding was the link button stopped this from happening. However, if you edit your post and add a link, it just puts the URL in despite using the link button. Very often if the URL is not clickable, I get to lazy to bother with looking at what people are linking too.

As in "must see fantastic super video link " This is particularly bad when it ends up being one that's been posted loads of times or is about some crap like motorbikes.
