Setting aside aesthetic considerations, which is the more efficient. Wooden lagging or wrapping the boiler in ceramic fibre sheet and encasing the lot in a steel shell.? Grateful for any suggestions.. Cheers, Geoff.

I'd guess that the ceramic fibre would be much the more efficient lagging. You should be able to find the relevant details through the internet, but may need to look at websites detailing pottery kilns to find the ceramic blanket info easily.

Why not go for aesthetics as well, ceramic blanket over-layed with wood, but make the wooden slats thinner than if it was just wood lagging alone.

Thanks Keith. One of my local model engineer suppliers has ceramic blanket 1/2" thick 1' x 2' sheets. I think I'll go with it. I'm still thinking of combination lagging. A wood lagged boiler does have a great deal of appeal. Funnily enough, many years ago, I worked for a short time with a maker of this stuff. They used to melt silica in an arc furnace and then blow it through special nozzles with steam (steam isn't dead yet eh?) into something that looked like fairy floss. Then it was compressed and stitched through with ceramic thread into blankets. You didn't want to breathe any of the clouds of dust. The production engineers used to joke that this stuff was nowhere near as good as asbestos but just as harmful.. Thanks again.. Geoff.
