They were in a turret on top of the fuzzy were they not.? – Perhaps they are yet to be added.

Like the BP Defiant seems that very few survived. Looks a lovely machine though does that.

On the Defiant yes, but they made powered gun turrets for many of the WW2 bombers as well. I'm not sure of the workshop layout but pointing towards the door to keep unwelcome callers away would seem prudent.

The last time I saw Boulton & Paul factory it was making double glazing. I suppose tghey picked up a few ideas doing the turrets…

I don't believe any B&P Defiant air frames survived. There was one being made at the factory in Wolverhampton a few years back as a non flying replica. From what I remember it was a bunch of people doing it and not a factory effort. Does anyone know if it was completed ?

There is only one original survivor it was at Hendon but I think it got moved to Cosford , The replica mentioned was finished and then was to be scrapped but got saved and is on display at Hawkinge.

There is a non flying Defiant at the RAF Museum, Cosford.

I hope that Rik's lathe is better at it's job than the aircraft, which was not at all good and didn't stay in first line use for long before being re-roled as a night fighter.

Thanks George, I will now have an excuse to ride one of my motorcycles to Cosford for a day. The Defiant was not there on my last visit.

Your workshop is a disgrace ! Spotless machines.bright lights,all the bits lined up on the shelves,not a speck of swarf nor a drop of oil to be seen !

This is NOT ON !! No doubt your eye, ear and dust protectors are all hanging on hooks,ready for use.together with the vacuum cleaner.

Next time you submit a photo,we want to see everything covered in muck.

Given the environment, I think it's more likely an old oil spill

Great lathe, Btw, Rik; now you've got to put it through it's paces.

That lathe looks very similar to the Chester and Waro models [the Chinese lathes of the day ] but perhaps the spec is a bit higher. I see you have a band saw ,new as well. They go well together. Enjoy,and many happy hours turning !!

Regarding the stain,not my pooch,he could and would do better than that ! How do I know ?

Why does everyone want to go CNC ? Surely for hobby use,hands on is much more satisfying ?

I seldom,if ever use inserts or tipped tools,I much prefer to grind my own from HSS, and I do not have a quickchange toolpost,just the common-or-garden 4 way post. Likewise,I have digital calipers [dont we all?],but I still prefer to use the old type,or a mike.

Am I fit for the retirement home ?

Not yet Larry, hang on in there!

I guess it depends upon perspective. I am time poor therefore anything that will speed up my ability to deliver a finished item – or with CNC, several identical items, will be incredibly helpful. Of course, I have to acquire the skills yet to achieve my objective…

Both hands-on and CNC have their place, the Tool and Die guy makes the point neatly in his YouTube video – sorry, no link, am allegedly at work

No, just plain tedious. I don't have a CNC lathe (the repetition lathe is a useful substitute) but I do have a CNC mill and it saves time, allows me to make multiple parts that are the same, allows me to make parts economically, and allows me to design and make parts that would be difficult or impossible by manual means.

On t'other hand I don't have a quick change toolpost on the lathe, and I don't have any digital calipers. I use micrometers up to about 16", and a set of large calipers beyond that.

Of course you are Larry as are a few others of us hereabouts . What I like about this hobby is that it is just that – a hobby. No rules and regs just come and go as we please. I have metric and imperial measuring stuff like many of us but I love to work in 'thous so I shuffle around with the calculator and Zeus book and the 25.4 mantra and am quite happy.

On the other hand I admire the get up and go of gifted model makers who can produce beautiful work in double quick time. I just am not one of them.

Hi Andrew,

That you need to make multiple parts economically would suggest that you operate more as a business rather than a hobby,in which case CNC would make sense.I doubt if you could operate otherwise. I just feel that most of the readers of this site are in the hobby branch [judging by the posts ] and would not regard CNC as all that important [not too many would have mikes up to 16" either ]. Most of the jobs we do are one off,and speed of production is not an issue,in fact sometimes the longer it takes,the better !

PS Never try to save time, you can,t all you can do is make better use of it. But then,you do.
