HI ,

Can anyone advise me please

On the Myford 254 lathe (any variant) Feed shaft from the multi speed gearbox to the saddle / apron.. When using Power feed or cross feed, as a safety measure, is the drive protected by a shear pin or adjustable slip type clutch?

On some Lathes such as the Myford 280, there is a user adjustable slip clutch built into the saddle. so it acts as a safety measure , or if you are using a bed stop will trip out when the saddle reaches the bed stop..

I have checked the manual and can't find a reference to it.

On mine there is a clutch at the left hand end of the hexagonal shaft. I don't think it is adjustable. Page 41 of manual item 27 refers. I've never had the nerve to just drive the saddle into a dead stop, but I think that is the idea. It wouldn't work using leadscrew

On my 254s the clutch is at the same position as on Duncan's lathe, but mine is adjustable it has a "C" spanner that has two lugs that engage in slots in the clutch and was supplied with the lathe when I bought the Lathe from Myfords.

Just had a close look, mine has a slot right across which could be used to tighten it up perhaps? Page 22 of the manual refers, but nothing about adjusting it. Does your manual mention it Michael?

There is definitely a clutch on feed shaft which can be used when turning to a dead stop. Works well.

Duncan, My manual doesn't mention anything about feed shaft clutch adjustment, The tool list for the lathe includes a Slotted nut spanner (Feed shaft adjusting) which came with my lathe.
