Hi I have been screw cutting a new cross slide nut and in order to make the nut standard I first made a tap hardened it then screw cut the phosphor bronze nut and then tidy it up with tap.

Perfect fit no play and just needs to mod slide to take nut.

Good stuff indeed. There is something very satisfying in using these antique machines to make their own spare parts. Self-regenerating.

Will you fit a roller thrust bearing to the cross slide handwheel for good measure?

Hi Thor I just used the OD as is I just made sure front clearance was ok with a ball nosed cutter. Hopper I have just drawn a mod for using a single thrust bearing on the handle side as the plate isn't thick enough to fit another on the screw slide but the area is quite small and there dosn't show any wear after 70 od years.

Yes, nice work David,

After 70 years the threads in my M type are wearing thin.

I really need to do what you have done.

I find it hard to see how you get the tap through the bronze but clearly you have.

Did you you screw cut say 3/4 deep and then finish with the tap?

Even so I would have thought it takes a lot force to complete cutting the thread with the tap.

I notice the square head on the tap is large, around 3/4" square?

Hi Geoff the tap was made from a piece of 16mm diamiter silver steel hardened and tempered, but the cutting diamiter was 0.510 inch diamiter giving a clearance of 10 thou on the outside. I actually cut the thread to depth and just used the tap to make sure it is correct size and no push off etc.

Hi Thanks David,

That makes sense, the tap is just skimming out a small amount to finish to size

Keep Posting on this, I will be interested to see your set up for removing the threads on the cross slide.
