I have a Long Chang LC15A round column mill/drill. I've searched far and wide for a manual with no success. The previous owner supplied two of the old tecalemit grease guns with the machine. One was full of oil and the other with copper coloured grease. It looks like he was using the grease to lube the spindle and the oil for everything else. He had fitted grease nipples to all the oiling points. Does this sound correct for keeping the machine properly lubed or should I be using oil for everything? He had maintained the machine to a high standard and I would like to do the same. Unfortunately He was not well when I bought the mill and I could not ask him about his lubrication procedure.

Slideway oil of 46 or 68 viscosity on everything except rolling element bearings, which would normally be greased. But not with copper-filled anti-seize assembly compounds ! Just use a "normal" bearing grease.on the spindle bearings.

If you post a picture of your beast the guys can quite often point you in the direction of a similar machine which does have a manual

                Ray,

Assuming that it's the same 'Long Chang' …

The company appears to have done quite nicely, and is proud of its history:

I like Castrol Magna BD 68 for slide ways and general heavy oil lubrication jobs. Its not quite as sticky as a pure slide way oil. According to the Castrol Tech Rep I spoke to before deciding to use it over 20 years ago its dual rated for lower speed bearing use too. Lets me standardise to two oils, Magana and Castrol Hyspin AWS 32 for spindle and general light oil jobs. Magna strings impressively if put on change wheels but doesn't hang onto debris the way greases and near grease oils do.

Great oil can oil for Honey Doo jobs like door hinges and the like as will flow in, slowly, but when its in it's in for ages. Do the gates every couple of years whether they need it or not. WD 40 lasts about a fortnight before the mice get vocal.

I'm sure there are other makes with oils of similar properties. Really brand is more a matter of what you can easily get is suitable containers. I go through 5 litres of each every couple of years (ish).

                  Clive.

Thanks for all the replies. I will charge one of the guns with oil as recommended here and clean out the other one and charge it with a bearing grease. I have tracked down a couple of similar manuals but they are sadly lacking on details when it comes to lubrication.
