Yet again! Metric screwcutting myford super 7

I am lucky enough to have 2 super 7’s and other lathes however “she”…. Wants the stable back so I need to get rid of one of the myfords. I am about to start metric thread cutting and will rarely need to cut any other. One myford has a gearbox the other does not. I can’t decide which to sell. When I first bought one I believed “gearbox must be better” however now I will be practically 100 metric I can’t decide. Buy the conversion kit, or a set of gears (well, the 2 I haven’t got). What would others do?

If you can live with these "approximate" metric pitches then I would stick with the gearbox and buy the 33 and 34 tooth gears.

At least it makes selecting fine feed much easier than having to set up a gear train.

Brilliant gentlemen. Thank you. There was no way I was going to make a decision as I find it almost impossible to decide things like that. I did search for charts like that and couldn’t find them, also aprogram called boxfthreadp to see if that would help me decide without finding it. Yes Rod. Those tolerances are certainly close enough. I can’t imagine running any threads long enough for it to matter. Now to clean up and advertise the standard super 7!

Rod – thanks for these, if M6x1 is coarse then what is M5x1.25? Pretty sure this is what I regularly use.

Gears arrived and all brilliant. Now I just need to convince her she does not need horse number 4 as much as I need two Myfords (which I know I don't really) but it's always handy to keep a spare.

I think it was Laurence (Lawrence ? ) Sparey who wrote 'much of the work we amateurs do on our ML7s is really too large for the machine'.

Your post had me wondering about the set-up required to turn the rims of a horse-sized treadmill!
