Evening All,

I am doing some workshop planning and would be grateful for the following dimensions for the VMC / 626 mills:

(i) I need the overall depth and width of the mill including wheel handles.

(ii) The mill will be going as close as possible to a wall on its left side, so what is the distance from the centre line of the mill to its maximum extension to the left, once again including wheel handles.

Thank you Vic & Mike for your help.

I have looked at the Warco Website already but wanted to double check. The Chester 926 dimensions are totally different although its is the same machine.

Just to confirm and using the Warco dimensions, the overall width would be 1092mm and the carriage would extend a further 370mm to the left?

Sorry to sound pedantic but I will be buying the mill later and once the position is decided upon there is not much flexibility.

You can gain an extra 3 or 4 inches if you make your LH table Handwheel redundant.

Also allow at least an extra 4 inches on height as you will probably end up making a spacer to lift your Z axis range.

My Warco VMC needs 1500mm from handle end to handle end and wound to full extension left to right, the depth is as warco quote. I think with a little work on the table end bearing housing a bit more travel could be gained if you may one day need it.

Hi NIckT

I'm right on the verge of getting one as well, just need to organise a workshop to accomodate it. I also would like some confirmation of a couple of dimensions, so I can plan ahead as I'm going to mount it on a bench and not the stand. And I have to have it hard up against a wall to the left!

Can anyone give the dimensions of the cast base (not the steel stand) i.e depth front to back, and the width?

Also, can anyone tell me the distance between the bottom of the cast base and the top of the table, when the table is in the lower position.

Can I also ask, does the screw for the knee protrude below the cast base into the steel base at all? If so, by how much?

I'm hoping the maximum space required either side of center of base, as you look from the front, is 750 (looks like Mike has confirmed this, thanks also).

Sorry if I am intruding on your post., but would really appreciate these critical dimensions.

I placed my Mill adjacent to the doorway. On full right traverse it intrudes into the doorway space.

It works for me.

Steven Vine – if you are bench mounting then you will need to allow for a hole in the bench and clearance underneath for the knee screw to come down into. On my early 626 model the screw comes down into the cabinet quite a bit, on mines it's 6".

Just had a measure.

Handle to handle on mine is 45 1/4"

With the table wound all the way to the left it measures 28 1/2" from the handle to the centre of the machine.

The Z screw protrudes 5" from the bottom of the cast base with the table down.

The distance from the top of the table to the bottom of the cast base is 17 1/4" with the table at the lowest point.

Forgot. Total width required Left to Right (working envelope) is just under 60".

I've allowed 6" behind the motor for access etc although you could go closer and swing the head if required. This puts the Y handle on my machine 46 1/2" from the wall.

Total height required on mine to raise the belt cover and remove the draw bar is 77 3/4". Mine is the MT3 version for which I made a self extracting draw bar, not essential but it shuts the yanks up…

Thank you everyone for your help and advice, especially the correct measurements for the machine. My colleague suggested cutting out cardboard shapes to represent the shape of the items of equipment that are going in the workshop. I have had a very productive day shuffling the cardboard pieces around and have come up with what appears to be a perfect solution.

No problem. My fixed machines are all located along the long side of my shed. Starting at the left I have the Mill, Drill then Lathe. I can work on long pieces on all machines if needed. I personally think it's a bad idea to put any machine at 45° in a corner as you can't work on long pieces but I know some do like this placement.

Have you got the length and width of the cast base at its bottom where it sits on the stand, and also the approx measurement from the back wall to the front of the cast base. I trying to work out the depth of bench I need?

The cast base is 16" wide and 22" front to back. With the motor just clearing the wall the back of the base would be about 8" away from the wall. Allowing for motor access and belt slipping etc your bench needs to be at least 32" – 34" I'd say Steve.

Morning chaps, I have just ordered a Warco VMC, can anyone tell me how much headroom is needed to remove the draw bar please? I have 2020mm between floor and the ceiling in my workshop will this be enough?

Hi Mark

That should be fine. I've just measured my ceiling / floor dimension as around 25mm more than yours and my drawbar comes out OK, but I have a 100mm raising block fitted, so you should have no problems.

If I remove the drawbar 'vertically' then I have 10mm or so to spare, but as the spindle bore is far greater than the drawbar diameter in practice you can tilt it as you remove it with lots of clearance. My guess is that you could also fit a 100mm raising block and still be able to remove the drawbar.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their advice on this thread and that I bought a Tom Senior Vertical Light mill this morning. Lot of thought went into it but one reason was its 'relatively' small footprint compared to the VMC.

Hi Mark,

I have the Warco 626 version and a ceiling height of 2003mm and not encountered any problems with removing the draw bar, so your 2020mm should be ample.

Hi all, sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I thought it made more sense to keep this kind of gold dust information together.

I too am trying to work out how to get a quart in a pint pot! The dimensions I'm interested in that I've not managed to find elsewhere are the clearance under the table at its lowest height (on the original stand) and the depth from the back of the throat to the wall.

The latter in particular looks quite large – just trying to work out if there are any potential overlaps to be had, which might make it a little less conspicuous!
