Hi all, I have been searching for an artical written by Lathejack on a redress of a Warco Gearhead lathe. I can find the photo album but no accompanying text.

Does anybody know where this is filed of can be found?

lathejack….can you possible help?

Hello

I just checked and it all seems to be working ok. When you click on the album the list of photos appear, you then have to click again on a photo which gives a larger image with the main text below the photo, arrows at the bottom of the image allow you to scroll through the album. Hope this helps.

Lathejack, thanks for that & yes I can find the text now. I have two of these lathes, a 1322 here in South East Asia & a 1330 in the UK. Both are the thick end of 10 years old now & whilst they are still performing very well, I sense an overhaul of the head stock is imminent. Both lathes tend to leak oil & the head stock on one has nipped up once or twice. Hence I am planning ahead. I wonder if you would pass on some info for me to assist with my preparations?

1) Was the removal of the spindle & lay shafts reasonable straight forward or did you need to fabricate any pullers to get the gears off & bearings out?

2) Were you able to procure all the bearings & oil seals easily? ( For the lathe in South East Asia I would need to procure all items in the UK before starting a stripdown)

3) How did you address preload on the spindle?

4) Did you address the internal bore of the spindle whilst you were at it? Both my spindles were undersized in the middle & would not pass specified bar stock. I addressed this by line boring in situ?

I would really appreciate any light you could shed on the foregoing.

Oh dear!!! Have just gone through "lathejack's" horror story on warco gh1330, and there was I about to order a new warco gh1236 when they open up after new year hols. Oh dear!!! Oh dear!!! Have I said that already? Surely they can't all be made to that apalling standard? Can they? He e e e l l l p! Oh no!

I've had a GH1330 for about three years now and it has performed well. I did experience some issues with the power feed on the saddle but this was easily addressed in a similar fashion to lathejacks solution.

My machine dates from 2004 but from what I have seen at warco the newer lathes are well made and quality control seems to have improved. I think lathejack was very unfortunate.

The headstock runs extremely quiet, no excessive slop on gears or layshafts and certainly no excessive crud in the oil bath, although the first job was to drain headstock and gearbox and give them a damned good clean to be certain.

As for after sales, I have no complaints there, Roger and the staff at Warco have always been very helpful andi have built up a good relationship with them over a number of years. ( I've had a number of machines from them going back before the gh1330)

I have to say, I like the look ofthe new gh1236 and would consider it if I did not already have a large lathe.

no association with Warco other than a very satisfied customer.

Thanks Coalburner, confidence on the up again. Am ready to order and take a chance. Am puzzled as to why lathejack didn't invoke sale of goods act based on state of NEW machine ,gearbox etc. There must have been a good reason I suppose.
