On my WIN10 Laptop, once Cortana was switched off, it has stayed OFF, ever since the early days of Free update.

Reminds me of my iPad thumbprint recognition system. Worked quite well when I set it up but doesn't work at all now. I suspect that fine abrasions and dirt/grease particles picked up in the shop have rendered my thumb unrecognisable.

I think there's a lot of conspiracy theory mixed in with the reality of W10.

It was actually very easy to do all the things offered by a bit of 'freeware' that the small print reveals to be 'adware' so i think some vested interests may be hyping up the 'evils' of W10.

Not so unfortunately. We live in an incredibly complicated world and inevitably our experiences are of it are narrow and often misleading. For example, my lifetime experience of the Fire Brigade is are that the service is unnecessary. Ditto lifeboats on ships. The truth is that people are particularly bad at understanding risk, even people who know that people are bad at understanding risks.

So yes personal experience is important, but beware – it has serious limitations. There are plenty of times when it's wise to take advice, preferably good advice.

Let's be careful out there!

Trouble is that Mr Gates (or rather his successor) has already done it. Upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 overwrote several of my security settings without warning or permission. It didn't happen by accident, it was deliberate. The problem isn't that Windows 10 is broken, the problem is that an upgrade provided by Microsoft committed a major breach of trust. I'm not happy with it, and it's only the latest example in a long history of corporate bad behaviour.

I'm still using Windows 10, but now I check upgrades before I apply them. And I try not to use Windows 10 for anything private.

I don't think I'm paranoid, but you never know…

Been using windows since 1992 and I ain't changing now, no siree.

Going to stick with 8.1 and XP. Got Hundreds if not thousands of quid of software, terrabytes of data, and it all works the way I want it to.

If I ever want win10 or any other system I'll buy a "new" machine for about 100 bananas

I've wasted enough of my finite and diminishing existence on software system issues

Well, I'm now free from being pestered by 'Get Windows 10 free U/G' prompts and having to disable GWX.exe every day !!. It disappeared from my Win7 laptop this morning and my CPU & Memory usage (while online) has dropped back to 2% & 28% respectively where it used to be several months ago (was 30% & 40% while online).

I'll stick with Win7 until is no longer possible!.

I thought I had Never10 installed but will need to double check.

Today, my windows 7 update is telling me there are 88 security updates to install, plus other updates for windows itself. I usually accept the security updates to retain some degree of integrity on my system.

So I tick just the security updates and deselect all other updates for windows. Clicking download then tries to initiate a Windows 10 install which I have not agreed to or selected anywhere, so for now I have stopped the download.

Richard, I'm not sure what you're saying about GWX? I installed this a few months back and have never been bothered by Win10 again. It seems to use 772k of memory and 0% of CPU so what's the issue? I've never had to disable it, and indeed never would! Especially after seeing this item in El Reg this morning.

So this is what the Microsoft Privacy Statement says about Cortana.

"Microsoft collects and uses various types of data, such as your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and who you interact with on your device. Cortana also learns about you by collecting data about how you use your device and other Microsoft services, such as your music, alarm settings, whether the lock screen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more."

Most phone type Apps seem to want access to your contacts list, etc, irespective of there seeming to be any reason for it.

Going online generally seems to mean losing any illusions of privacy you may harbour.

I appreciate your concerns. I can't see that I will come to any harm if Siri or Cortana made use of data relating to my internet activities (and they can get pretty sordid I can tell you!). As long as they don't harvest my login details for the bank and paypal etc then they can do what the hell they like with my browsing history etc. It is not going to bring my world crashing down around me; I'm still unscathed after 30 years of internet-ting. If my personal data adds to the overall statistics then so be it. As I stated before, any software on your machine can harvest data and phone home, and you probably won't even know about it.

Talking of Cortana. She's hyped up to be the next best thing since your ex girlfriend, but she's pretty useless really. On my Tablet, I wake her up with "Hey Cortana", then instruct her to "go to 'www.model-engineer.co.uk'. All she is capable of is starting me off in a browser search for the model-engineer. She's too dumb to go directly to a website. She just leaves me there and expects me to do the single click. How useless is that. She can readily tell me what the weather will be like in Milton Keynes, or remind me when I will next need the bathroom visit, but I'm not interested in that rubbish.

Old First Rule "if you want a private conversation, speak quietly in the middle of a large field"

Second Rule, "never commit to writing or sound/vision on a computer or otherwise (telephone) anything you wish to keep absolutely private"

Nothing has changed to alter these, merely an increase in risk of loosing your privacy if you get careless or complacent.

With this irritating random Win10 'Pop Up' living in my System Tray, I was ending the Process via the Task Manager daily (other methods were available).

Having done a Complete scan and then a Clean Install of Win 7 back in March, all was fine then.

After some 48 essential Updates to bring it up to date, I noticed the CPU Cooling Fans kicking in as soon as I logged on to the Interweb caused by the memory usage increase being unstable and inconsistent.

No Malware or bugs causing it.

Found issues existed with problematic/updates and significant CPU/Memory usage by Svshost (system).

When I checked the services for it in Task Manager, I found it was WUAUSERV causing it. Found some help online which temporarily sorted it, but still came back with high usage.

This all stopped on the 30th July, day after end of Free Win U/Grade and the GWX.exe disappeared as well! .

So like I said, my machine is now fast, clean and only very lighty 'Sips' at the CPU & Memory usage with no Fans running.

I've not found a good multi-axis CAM package for Linux yet.

One reason is so Siri can do things like 'call my brother' – it has to be able to know 'pete' is your brother.

All the parsing for Siri is done remotely, it's pretty ,much useless without an internet connection. My ancient Nokia does voice recognition in the phone and sadly doesn't say useful things like 'I'm sorry I didn't understand that' and 'I haven't a clue what you mean here's what I found on the web' or make jokes about Star Trek.
