Stick one point of your dividers along the rule for the 0.250" divisions and then use the dail to set the remaining decimals then stick the other divider point in that. You then have your dividers set to 0.001" accuracy(ish)
So if you wanted to draw a 2 5/8" circle the radius is 1 5/16" or 1.3125. Stick one end in 1.25 on the rule, dial in the remaining 0.063 and then put your other point in that.
