Wow, did it really take you 27 years to decide?

      .

The decision was triggered by this particular copy being 40p

For your amusement: You may like to plot the offer price of issue 1 against time surprise

      MichaelG.

      .

daveb … did you miss the follow-up ^^^ question

If I recall correctly, the price peaked at about £25

but those silly days are long gone.

      MichaelG.

Yes, thanks Michael, I usually do, upto date now. I remember copies of the Book of the Myford going for £45+ a while ago, must've upset a few people when they printed a new batch. Dave

Ok I've only finished it all today but it is also my first proper project in metal. The main question is have I made enough?qctoolposts.jpg

          An excellent collection!

          You can never make enough!

I'm trying to work up the courage to make another batch. I might use a tough aluminium alloy like one of the 7000 series if I can find it at a reasonable price, as much to speed it up as save my cutters!

            You need n+1 tool holders.

Made a straight knurler along the lines of Vics' design. Slipped up with the lower pivot and have now corrected the oversight. Need to finish of the top. Maybe put a big knurled knob on it!

No, you only need two. The one on the lathe that you just finished using and the one you can't find anywhere.

                    Very nice.

Answer – no, never enough for some reason.

Cleaned up the Hardinge HLV yesterday, much swarf of various types had been allowed to accumulate in the back of the chip tray. Also cleaned out and refilled the coolant tank, with kerosene! Makes a good wash down system laugh. While I'd got the lathe clean, I tried to work out where the oil/ATF leak in the apron gearbox was. I didn't think it could be any of the obvious joint faces, since I'd been careful to make sure they were flat and well anointed with Hylomar when I rebuilt it four years ago.

I think I found it. Where the apron motor and worm drive bolts to the apron there is a joint that could have been sealed with a gasket or an O-ring, but doesn't have either. It allows ATF to bypass the shaft oil seals and drip out of a drain hole. Loctite 222 seems to have stopped the leak.

Wasn't a big leak, but the gearbox doesn't hold a lot of oil, so it'd still empty itself over a week or two.

You can never have enough; at the last count I have 18. It wouldn't be the first time I was reluctant to change out a cutter for a small job & having to check centre height… again, maybe I'm a tad OTT wanting to have ea. holder to have a tool in it… dont know

Like most of us, it was today that I finished the garage. 20 Square meters on a 4" re-inforced concrete base. Total cost including a pumped concrete ready mix base 6,000 pounds. Garage made from 28mm Douglas fir weatherboard supported by 4" x 2" framework with a clay tiled roof.

Finally gave up on Fusion 360. I've never gotten the hang of it. Instead, I've gone back to DesignCad but coughed up the necessary to get the latest version.

I've checked on a free trial version and it will read all the drawings I've done to date in 2D but with the added advantage that it will also do 3D. I've had a dabble at 3D with my old program but didn't consider it worth persevereing with but with 3D printing and machining it may be worth doing.

I'm just waiting to receive the authorisation code.

DesignCad produces outputs that are compatible with Autocad, which might be useful in the future.

                                        .

I have now started dismantling it, to remove the tabbed lever that controls the detent pin.

Unfortunately, the grub screw which is down [or should that be up?] a deep counterbore on the underside, probably has a nominal 2.5mm hex-socket … but is (a) apparently very tight, and (b) of rather suspect quality.

Simple question: Has anyone dismantled one of these ? … am I dealing with a threadlocked screw, or just a very tight one ?

I really don't want to 'round' the socket !!

Yesterday I fitted the perch brackets to the smokebox on my traction engines:

                                                  perch_bracket_fitted_me.jpg

The casting thickness varies, so each homemade stud (1/4" BSF) was individually fitted so the same number of threads show on each one. Can anyone spot the "deliberate" mistake?

I thought I'd bought a 1/4" BSF die but couldn't find it. So I ended up using an old split die stamped AM (Air Ministry) and 1940. That would have been about the time my father started his apprenticeship at RAE Farnborough. Nuf sed.

Can anyone spot the "deliberate" mistake?

                                                    .

Two guesses … probably both wrong:

                                                    1. The upper and lower groups of three [as pictured] look to be differently arranged
                                                    2. You have not yet made the special washers, to get all the hexagons neatly aligned

                                                    Lovely job, whatever !!

The arrangement of the upper and lower groups of three are different as the web is not symmetric, so the upper group have to be closer together. However, you are in the correct area. Look more closely at the symmetry of the lower group of three.
