Citroen did a few weird & wonderful 2CV variants. There was the 'Mehari', almost identical to the Mini-Moke,

The 'Bijou', a sports car style bodyshell.

Then there was the 'Safari', 4WD by virtue of having 2 engines each driving 2 wheels

The 'Ami 6', a conventional looking estate style body on a 2CV chassis,

Then there were the 'Dyane', the 'van' version and the French Forestry Service double enders already mentioned.

          Regards,

          Richard.

In theory I should dig up and divide the root, but I'm afraid that if I do so it may well expire. So I'm going to leave it well alone. I grow gooseberrries too; in fact all sorts of fruit. I do pretty well with fruit, but for some reason vegetables are a bit of a disaster. Despite them having a reputation for being difficult I also seem to do fine with chillies. So my plan is to grow what I can't buy, or is expensive, in the supermarket.

Ah, spotted dick, I remember that from school. And jam roly-poly. Plus gooey custard of course. Yer just don't get proper puddings these days. Darn shame.

Hi, this evening I fitted one of my small 4 jaw chucks to a new backplate that I finished making yesterday.

              new backplate 01.jpg

              new backplate 02.jpg

This will fit onto my Mini lathe and by removing the four socket grub screws, it will be mountable onto my small rotary table using the four outer holes on the backplate. A pin has been made that fits into the centre hole of the RT and the centre hole of the backplate, to insure concentricity between the lathe and the RT.

              chuck and rt.jpg

Below is a thick washer that I have trued up and machined a shallow recess to take a steel blank for a small locomotive wheel, that I hope I can make.

              chuck and new backplate.jpg

Below is the back of the pre-paired blank that will be soft soldered into the recess in the thick washer. Alongside, is the wheel I hope to copy.

I have at least 3 different types of rhubarb just growing wild ,must have been planted many years ago. One standard has stalks you could brain an elephant with, another I call champagn rhubarb is very nice with a sharp taste. But I can't have it anymore, it causes gout. So now my two favorites- rhubarb and custard and liver and onions are now gone.. 2CV's- I made a double engine 4×4 safari type copy some years ago but the hassle getting registered and insurance was too much, it work well tho',.

These helmets might well be fine, but you only get one pair of eyes to experiment with. There have been horror stories about other cheap items in the past so I would hesitate to use a cheap item which could have possible bad outcomes.

                      Doug

Safety is, of course, paramount but I am (at least prospectively) with richardandtracy on the merit of a cheap and cheerful automatic helmet for the occasional welder. Any helmet should be checked for function before use.

I have owned several helmets ranging from the very basic to the seemingly expensive ESAB Eye Tech variety. I have had two of the latter and both have died over time. The advice elsewhere is to try replacing the batteries and I have spent part of the day setting up my small router table to cut round and open up the sealed cartridge case only to find that the electronics are encapsulated and beyond my ability to do anything with them.

Looking around it seems that helmets at the price Richard mentions are not automatic and perhaps he would give some more information.

Best of all, has anyone a recommendation for an automatic helmet that will see me out?

So far as I can see, my helmet is entirely automatic and passive, working on the energy collected from the solar cells on the front. There is no more room for batteries than there is in a pair of reactolite glasses.

I am an occasional welder, but our welder with one is a pro. He's had his 6 months, and hopes to get a couple of years from it.

                        Regards,

                        Richard.

Regarding auto darkening welding helmets this is what I found with ones I've used.

One of the things I checked on my auto helmets will they darken when using low settings on my Tig welder as some don't have such fine settings.

When I used to mig weld car chassi repairs I found the auto helmet in confined shaded areas would not always work and that was a quality helmet.

Arc eye can be very unpleasant.

A trick I was told for growing rhubarb was to dig it up when it was finished in Autumn and leave the crowns on the ground to get frosted over Winter, then replant in Spring.

I just left it in the ground and it grew and grew and grew!

Talking of auto darkening welding helmets and Xmas Cracker welders, Lidl will be doing some in next week's offers. At least if they are total crap you can take them back, unlike ebay etc. It seems they are capable of welding a set of drop handle bars to a metal plate – must bear that in mind.

It seemed to me from my own experiences with helmets of various qualities that one key parameter is the minimum darkness. This is often quoted as 9 or so (eg the Lidl example). Much less and you can't see what is happening with low currents. Also how clear they are with no arc, so you can see WTF is happening before you strike the arc.

Also, for anyone over 50 or so, a magnifying lens allows you to see WTF is going on. Bifocal or varifocal glasses don't work, as you can't look down through a helmet, yet you need to be able to focus at close quarters. For me, that was a revelation (available from most welding suppliers).

After serious illness 10 years ago, I am now partially sighted and have had difficulty mig / tig welding for several

years. I decided to spend a bit on a better helmet to see if it would help.

What a difference my welding is now back to what it was pre illness

that's very good (I was coded)

I bought a Lincoln Electric Autodarkening Welding Screen Helmet Mask Linc Screen II MIG TIG

                                      off ebay for £68

                                      highly recomended

The next part of the V10 Re-furb saga…

ALL painting ( except a few few icky handwheels..) is done – Garage interior as well…

The leadscrew alignment is also done, as well as Halfnut alignment to leadscrew. Those are the slow and painstaking tasks out of the way, so final assembly tomoorow and wiring up the next day! Nearly there…

A reminder of what it looked like at the start:

The next part of the V10 Re-furb saga…

ALL painting ( except a few few icky handwheels..) is done – Garage interior as well…

Cabinet Assembly is mostly complete, lathe is part assembled to permit calibration and alignment of Headstock vertical and horizontal to bed, ditto the Tailstock. The leadscrew alignment is also done, as well as Halfnut alignment to leadscrew. Those are the slow and painstaking tasks out of the way, so final assembly tomoorow and wiring up the next day! Nearly there…

A reminder of what it looked like at the start:

                                                painting the Big Bits..

                                                Cabinet Assembly underway:

                                                cabinet assembly.jpg

Everything fitted as needed to complete calibration and alignment.

                                                Assembly continues Tomorrow!
