Made up a tile effect base for my S10V; was going to go for checker board effect but couldn't find any black & white that matched scale wise so…

Well I did make it to the club meeting for a very enlightening presentation by Mike Chrisp about Model Engineer Exhibition history. He is an excellent speaker having been a college lecturer as well as ME editor and one time member of our club.

Thanks; not glass, Perspex, lets people see the operation of valve from eccentric.

During a trip round north Cambridgeshire this morning I collected some steel blanks so that I can have a go at making helical and internal gears:

Guess what I'll be doing this afternoon. smile

Day off today, to collect new (to me) CNC milling machine from Nottingham and all my stored machines from Harrogate then unload at the house in Lytham. About 6-7 tonnes in all, so not something to attempt myself.

The machine gods smiled on us and apart from a shower at 9am (which we successfully fixed by drinking tea), it was ideal weather. All went well, although moving a 2.8 tonne milling machine on pallet trucks isn't easy.

                Arrived

Yes, the milling machine on the left is quite a bit bigger than the Bridgeport to the right of it.

We took the opportunity to empty the sump onto the lorry, saving me the bother of doing it later. This also allowed me to examine the underside, a view you rarely get to see(!).

                Oops

Managed to right it again without ripping off any of the servos or bending the ballscrews.

                Let me in

And finally got it down the back of the house into the open air workshop. I bet not many people have one of those.

                Open air workshop

Quite a relief to be all back in one piece. The workshop should be weatherproof by the end of November.

I bet you can make some serious swarf with that lot.

Did you plan to build the workshop around the machines for ease of crane off or did it just work out that way?

Ah pictures, so the machines exist! I'm glad all went well. I'd have been having kittens looking at the mill from that angle. It's like one of those slow motion "what happened next" crash TV shows. Except that fortunately it didn't. Looking at the pictures it looks like the machines were dropped on the pavement. So moving them to the embryo workshop was done with blood, sweat and a pallet truck? At least with an open air workshop you won't have problems with poor lighting. No doubt you've already cracked the first of several beers.

Clive – the guy was selling the big one to make space, having been unable to do anything with it himself, so I needed to get it shifted from outside his work unit. I had delayed it about 4 weeks already due to the lack of anywhere to put it here. My workshop is currently little more than a concrete pad right now but good enough to receive said machine.

The cost of calling in at my mum's was only about 20% or so of the total and allowed me to get my stuff out of storage and over here. The final resting place is about 20m from the street, so not craneable. I will have to remove the head / ram assembly to get it out when the time comes…..

Yes, they were unloaded onto the driveway. The large machine was moved using a pair of interleaved pallet trucks with the machine on a handmade pallet made of three 2"x4" verticals and six 2"x6" cross pieces. The others were moved using my trusty Weber 1 tonne hydraulic engine crane. This also came in handy to recover the unintentional inversion(!) Luckily we had a couple of the builders to help out with the big push.

Almost too knackered to lift a can but I'm sure that will resolve shortly.

On Tuesday Steve from Landylift moved my newly aquired lathe to mine and i've spent some of today putting it back together and giving it a bit of a clean.

Next job is to get my head round inverters and find a source of 415v that will allow me to use all the lathes buttons and controls.

some pictures of steve moving the lathe, not quite as epic as the pictures above of the CNC stuff

We have been plagued by a rabbit down the small holding, eating the tops off the beetroot etc. so i went down two days ago and walked round and found no sign of it, walked back to the car and sleeved the gun and put it in the boot. As I looked to my left, there was the rabbit about 5 meters away munching grass!

So, back down today just before dusk and slowly went round and stood looking at the bees as they were still flying and then I saw Mr rabbit in a gap between the apple trees. I stood still and he sat up and his ears twitched and I shot him in the back of his head. He's in the fridge now ready to casserole tomorrow.

I will have to wait now and see if it was the only one, the Nephew says it would sit there looking at him as he tilled the earth.

No sign of Myxymitosis yet around here.
