I have a Warco GH1322 lathe which has worked perfectly over the last three and a half years. I have not had the chance to use it since the New Year. and now none of the shafts rotate! although the spindle drive is OK.

It seems the problem is with the traverse gearbox. I have removed the various obvious parts and hex head screws but still cannot remove the gearbox case cover.

Has anyone removed this cover on any of these machines or any similar type?

Any knowledge or suggestions would be most welcome

      Jerry

            Hi Jason,

I had already looked at that album expecting to find the answer, but he only accessed the spindle gearbox, the one I need is below that, as in the picture.

When I took the front off my 280 it was stuck on with sealant so you may need to prize it off once the socket head screws are removed.

Be ready for all the oil to fall out.

Does it show anything in the manual that may be stopping it comming off.

I have already drained the box, fill & drain plugs.

The best information available for these GH machines seems to be the Grizzly equivalents. In this case the G9036.

There are no dis-assembly details down to this level.

                  Hi Jason,

I have now solved the problem with the gearbox cover.

You were at least 99% right, The Gasket was totally hidden by paint, but more significant there are also roll-pins on each side which were also totally hidden. In the end I managed to separate the 2 faces without damaging the gasket, by the judicious use of a hammer and various screwdrivers to prise the cover off.

                  Thanks for your interest.

                  Best regards

                  Jerry

Not necessarily relevant, but my Warco BH600 look alike appeared to have severe belt slip. In fact it was merely that the shaft for the belt tensioning lever had not been dimpled deeply enough, allowing the lever to slip on the shaft. Strip out shaft, deepen dimple, reassemble and no more problem.

Hopefully your problem will be as simple to fix.

Sounds like driving pin has sheared/fallen out, or a pin locating the selector to its shaft has gone AWOL, unless something has developed excessive end float allowing gears / dog clutch to come out of mesh. Probably at the input end of things.

                      Thanks for your comments Howard.

You will see from the above that I manged to get into the traverse gearbox after some faffing about.

As I removed the cover one of the brass slippers had fallen off the end of the selector; whether this was the root of the problem I cannot yet tell, but all the gears seem to mesh correctly and they ttravel along their shafts freely.

As has been found by others there was a thick film of grit-in-suspension at the bottom of the box. I have cleaned that away, applying a mix of 68 grade oil in xylene with vigorous brushing to remove the sticky and solid deposits. The cover has been left open overnight to allow any solvent to evaporate.( The evaporation rate of xylene ,mixed isomers, is only a little slower than ethanol (Hofman 1932), but its solvent power for mineral oils is particularly good.)

                      Thank you for your contribution.

                      Jerry
