Why on earth do people do it?
      Anyone with other unusual collections?

Old tools do not count. That's perfectly normal.

I wish I could still get Harzkäse with caraway seeds. Never mind the label, nobody could fake the cheese. laugh

Apparently over 1/4 million in the largest collection.

First reaction is "How the beep do you end up with 1/4 million, presumably, unique designs?". Even if a lot are variations on the themes of "Fred Bloggs' Superstrong Cheese".

Second reaction is "How the beep does anyone find the time to locate, collect and catalogue 1/2 million labels." At 12 hours a day thats around one a minute for a year. Um "Does not compute!"

Well, I collect receipts. I have many thousand of the damn things stuffed and scattered throughout my van and every now and again they find their way into a biscuit tin for safer storage. This hobby is very prevalent among the self employed I have found.

                    I collect money.

The problem is I'm not very good at it.

Perhaps you should ask the Inland Revenue for advice they seem to have considerable expertise in collecting money.devil

Be 'VERY' careful; if you show up on their radar they'll come 'a hunting' ya!'. you're only safe if you run a huge business & have finances tucked away 'elsewhere' or can prove 'non dom'… devil thinking

I’m already on the list they collect from me on a monthly basis.

I have no wealth to tuck away etc.

This was triggered by a presenter on the radio this morning mentioning that he had collected cheese labels in his youth and assumed he was the only one, then people emailed in saying they too thought they were the only person that collected them. Then they discovered there were enough doing it to need a word for it. I wonder how many hits google got.

A dozen or so antique telescopes from about 1780 onwards. Some of the late 19C to early 20C examples are very good.

They are very good at collecting money from the likes of us, but if you're very rich and don't want to pay your dues they seem to struggle

I used to collect interesting cigarette lighters. Mass produced stuff primarily. But charity shops stopped selling them (an angry lady in Salisbury shouted at me for daring to ask if they had any lighters in a British Heart Foundation shop…. how dare I etc. etc.) and ebay means finding anything of interest for a few quid just doesn't happen.
