Hi,a friend of mine found these in dads garage could anyone tell me what the correct name is for them?

Tapered thickness gauges.

Ypu push one into a gap and read the thickness off the scale.

They are tapered gauges for measuring hole diameter. I have never seen that style. I have a set having the came function. It consists of 4 or 5 leaves, about 5" long and held together with a screw like a set of thickness gauges.

How would you measure a hole with one of these ?

Presumably you shove it up the 'ole and read off how far it went in on the scale.

I'd use them for paint scraping

 

but then i also used my slip gauges for shimming up lathe tools ,before i had a Dickson !!

That was quick,thank you.I put Taper thickness guages into google and scrolled through all the images and finally got this

Yes for holes alright. Taper across their width, not their thickness. Pic 3 25mm+, pretty big gap for gauges that all appear to be less than 2mm thick, or is pic 3 a wedge !!
