Tom senior M1 horizontal arbor

Hi I have recently acquired a Tom Senior M1 milling machine but haven't got the correct horizontal Arbor. Was wondering if anybody could supply a picture of the correct Arbor. I'm assuming it's a Morse taper 3 on the end and drives on this with a draw bar.

Either 3MT or Int 30.

Thanks i'm assuming the 2 grooves in the output coupling are used only with the vertical head and all the drive for the horizantal arbor comes from the MT3 taper which is secured by the drawbar.

If I were you, I would not assume anything, were I to be a beginner.

There is a marked difference between INT30 and morse taper. Check out on the internet, if you are unsure.

Anyways, this is a ‘bump’ for the thread, so someone with the actual machine might see it and help.

I have an M1 horizontal arbor in good condition Philip and I will upload photos on this thread tonight.

My Senior's horizontal arbours are 30 int. The vertical spindle is 2mt. Info is hard to find on this make, but then again info is usually hard to find most machines over 30 years old.

I had a difficult time finding a horizontal arbor for my Tom senior mill. After regularly surfing ebay I finally came across an add for several new ones available which would fit my machine. I took a punt, and am happy with what I received; however, I need to make a new carrier bushing to fit the outboard end of the shaft on my overarm support.

The arbor is INT-30 , has a one inch diameter shaft, and came with a dozen spacers of varying size. There were no manufacturer identification marks, and the price if I recall correctly was about sixty (£60.00) pounds. Here is a photo.

Thanks Mike my drive is definately MT3, I'm thinking MT3 was the earlier version and INT30 came later. I have 4 old surplus arbours of varying lengths with INT30 tapers. The taper part appears to be a separate piece so I was going to remove the INT30 taper by destroying it then boring a soft end MT3 arbour (RDG sell them) and fitting it to the old 1" shaft. I was unsure if all the drive came through the taper or wether they used the 2 drive grooves on the output shaft of the milling machine. Looking at your pics it all the derive comes from the taper.

My home made vertical head (which is in a bad way) uses the 2 drive grooves for drive. Is that correct?

Don't be too hasty cutting it up, I have a 3MT Tom senior arbor which doesn't fit my machine, I need somebody to swap it for a 30 INT! I'll try and get a photo tomorrow.

I’m not sure how you propose to get the two parts lined up perfectly, to run true.

When I made an arbor, I fitted an oversized (diameter) length of steel to the MT end, and then turned the bar to size.

Let me know how you are going to do it. It would save me a load of turning for the next one.

Not sure about your vertical head, the one on my mill has an MT-2 taper.

Hope you and Durhambuilder work out an equitable swap.
