Metric rivnuts are easy to get hold of in the UK, but I have been asked about unified ones in the sizes under 1/4″. There are plenty on ebay from the USA with the added large postal charges. I am making an 8-32 UNC adaptor for the tool used for metric ones.

If the worst comes to the worst, you could make them!

(I had to when given an otherwise nice roller cabinet, with damaged M6 fixings for the handle)

No idea why the Amazon link now displays as above; it was OK when I posted it.

Box of mixed imperial “Rivnuts” HERE, but only 3 left apparently

When Howard mentioned making them, it caused me to compare thread sizes, and tomorrow I will look at the 3mm ones. That thread is 0.1181″ and 8-32 is 0.164″. 4mm would probably be too large to retap. I very much doubt if 3.5mm rivnuts exist. Roger is going to try the local suppliers, but there is not so much demand for unified nowerdays.

I think he wanted at least 200

Well, the ones that I linked were £9.99 for 100

[ but they’re probably the wrong colour ]

I did consider those blind ones, but would have to confer with Roger regarding the length, 11/16″ is very long for such small rivets.

The 3mm are too small to tap out to 8-32, and the 4mm are too large. The 4mm aluminium ones strip the threads 4 times out of five.

Last Thursday, Roger ordered some 8-32 aluminium rivnuts from China and yesterday (Wednesday), he brought them in. That was pretty quick delivery. I made a tool for the rivnuts out of some hex steel bar, but it showed some distress while testing the 8-32 thread. I made another out of a 1/2″ aircraft bolt, that should be a lot stronger.

Looking at Normandy Fasteners’ web-site I see they offer what I had always known as “hank bushes” – the hexagonal bushes fitted from the rear of the panel by expanding the shank, itself countersunk like a union nut, into a countersink on the outer face.

Once installed, and especially after painting, they are indistinguishable from plain nuts and I can think of many uses in model-engineering, so I am surprised our suppliers seem never to have heard of them.
