I've a small keyless chuck I would like to use, it's one that came with my Hitachi drill, I've removed the SDS shank but for the life of me I can't work out what thread it is, it's 20tpi or 1.25 pitch , any ideas? I wonder if it's there own thread.

Giving us the diameter would help, but probably 1/2in. UNF (20tpi) one of the two common standards for replaceable chucks on electric drills.

Sorry Keith, I'm at the girl friends now, but I seam to think it measured around 12.3mm, drilled and taped 12 mm X 1.25 and it was to tight, drilled and tapped half inch 20 UNF to loose? Now you see my problem.

Sounds like it could be metric fine, 12mm x 1.25mm. That is two thread pitches down from the normal metric coarse of 12mm x 1.75mm. This one is commonly used in automotive applications so a good bolt warehouse should be able to match it up.

For info:

12mm metric threads, M12 x 1.0mm, M12 x 1.25mm, M12 x 1.5mm and M12 x 1.75mm are all standard items.
