Can anyone remind what they're officially called? I lit on them accidentally once and bought some for a job which needed detents, but the project was stalled by a house move during which they went AWOL. Now I can't find where I got them from despite Googling.

I've always known them as ball detent screws. I have no idea where to get them in the UK but there are a couple of big tooling houses here that have them in all sizes.

That link is particularly handy if you want an overview of some of the other styles of screw in ball plunger devices should you have an application needing that sort of thing but not in a grubscrew.

As ever with this primarily industrial device the major problem, once you have figured out the proper name, is getting hold of a few without paying insane prices. All to often in this sort of circumstacne 10 costs more than 100 by the time its delivered.

Thanks, spring plunger doesn't ring a bell but they are the very things I'm after. To make a blade-sharpening machine with accurate preset angles -there's an irony in that the tools I shall use to make it are sharpened by eye, but it's paid work and the customer is king….
