      Hi all,

Can anyone suggest where I can purchase thin steel strip from? I am making a reed for one of our textile machines and the old strips were 1/32" x 3/32", but reed makers now will only supply 0.8mm x 3mm. The edges need to be very slightly rounded. I have a supplier, but I get the feeling he is a bit reluctant (being a reed maker!), however the price was good at £1.36 a meter cut to pieces and delivered.

      Any thoughts?

      James

          BobHi James,

you might be able to buy thin metal like this from a clock makers suppliers. It might be in flat form or wound like a flat spring.

I'm sure somebody will come up with a more certain supplier/resource.

I have previously bought round edged spring material from suppliers of steels for use in artificial limbs. Unfortunately the supplier I used in Sheffield went out of business a few years ago but there must be others.

I have quite a long length (more than you will ever need!) of stainless spring steel, round edged, flat wire. It is 0.70 x 2.50mm which is very close to your imperial dimensions.

What lengths do you want it cutting into?

                  Hi all,

Thanks fr your replies. I should have made it clear, I did actually buy this from him – but I am looking for a slightly more willing future supplier.

Ian that sounds really good. SS would be handy as the reeds do have a tendency to rust – which is why I need to make up some new ones. I would need to double check the exact dimensions, but each read uses around 50m of material. Would you have that much?

                  Kind regards,

                  James

Ha! I wonder if the 'mystery tool' if or rolling reed wire?
