Sumitomo Carbide tips

Hi,I have a Sumitomo lathe tool and priced replacement tips for it which worked out over £10 each which is far too pricey for hobby work .Has anyone got one of these and has found a cheaper source of replacement tips?This is whats written on the insert box.

Without looking up the finer details represented by the letters after the numbers these from APT at just over £3 a pop are DCGT 110302

That is a stainless grade insert. What are you mostly cutting and how much power do you have with your lathe?

In that DCMT11030X range is a very big variety of insert chip breaker /geometry, nose radius, and coatings. Some of the coated inserts for stainless do very well for home workshop use, especially the ground ones like what you linked to in your OP. Others are not so sharp , and require more power to create the shear and to generate the swarf as chips. Making long strings is not what the inserts are designed to do. Keep in mind most are for use with industrial production machines with feeds and speeds and depths of cuts that create chips, even on the finer finish paths. That is why they make so many geometries and grades in the most common of tool holding styles.

I got the tool along with a Boxford 280.I will mainly be using aluminium and mild steel and occasionally stainless.If I'm searching for replacement what code should I put in so I know they will fit?

DCGT 1103– is the bit you need to know for shape and size. The ones I linked to are good for aluminium and will also work on steel and stainless but for heavier cuts on steel and iron look at DCMT 1103–

Jason beat me to it, the AK10 denotes grade for Aluminum and other non-ferrous metals and plastics.

Jason the one you linked is DCGT 11T302 not DCGT 110302 do this not mean it won't be correct size because its T instead of 0?I have tried putting DCGT 1103 in to the search boxes of insert supply places and getting no results.

Sorry missed the T3, which are slightly thicker. Have a word with APT as it is possible their ones will still fit but sit a bit higher if not you will have a much smaller choice.

It may work out cheaper to get a holder that will take commonly available tips rtaher than pay out more for ones to fit the holder you have. The £70 difference in the cost of a box of 10 would soon pay for a holder.

MSC list the 1103** but only in Sumitomo.
