Stuart beam engine cylinder

The cylinder casting for the Stuart beam engine has inlet ports cast into the side (location of the steam chest) and inlet ports on each end of the cylinder. Are these ports connected and if so how do I remove the casting sand that appears to be blocking them.

Bit of fuse wire poked into the holes and banging the casting on the bench will clear the core sand eventually, yes they are connected.
