I wish to complete a live layout with a Stuart No. I and a Yarrow boiler. I would like to make my own condenser and displacement pump etc. UTubed myself to sleep. But having difficulty finding actual plans/drawings for these peripheral bits. Would welcome any suggestions leading to procurement sources please.

Do you have access to old copies of Model Engineer? Much of what you want will have been described in ME at some point in the last hundred or so years, maybe not at the exact size you want. There was a Yarrow boiler described by Terrence Holland a few years back that might be about the right size. I don't recall seeing too many condensers described in detail. You will probably find a few pumps. The Leak compound, subject of a series around 1983, had an Edwards style air and water pump which would be a bit bigger than you would want for the Stuart #1, as well as a pair of feed pumps either side of it. This would be worth looking at as you could come up with something similar but smaller to suit the Stuart. (The Stuart Triple also has an Edwards style pump, but in that case much smaller than you want.)

You might look for steam launch information. The Steam Boat Association has some old information available. Most of this sort of item would be a little bigger than you want but once you know how to do it you can scale to suit.

As John says you are more likely to find condensers shown on marine engiens which could be adapted to suit, there were a couple of nice ones in ME in 1923 and another in 1924.

John – Thanks for reply. Yes my club has a comprehensive collection of ME`s. But without specific references. Articles and drawings are, as you will know, very hard to track down. Then because the library is hardbound I cannot copy the articles. Even if there was a photocopier on the premises.

I am not familiar with the Leak compound, but will strive to enquire as that sounds most interesting.

A kind member on here has given me the Yarrow articles and I spoke at some length to the guys from The Steam Boat Association at Sandown who where most informative. Ordered a few relevant Amazonian tomes. So will see if they hold any specific info. Will post further if I find any manufacturing details.

                Hi Rod,

Don't forget that if you have a digital camera you can photograph the pages from the hardbound magazines. Also the online ME indexes can be downloaded on a spreadsheet and then searched for references & sorted into order if necessary. If you don't know how to do this then let me know what you want to search for and I will see what I can find.

                Chris.

Thanks I am in the process of doing this for the index. I took some photo`s of the relevant pages but need to go back with the DSLR as results from the phone where not too clear. I have gratefully received some offline help with the 1924 and 1923 articles and I am currently draughting the initial GA. Although simplified these articles proved to be of immense assistance.

Using the Dias Costa search engine I get 125 results for 'condenser' in the title field.
