A few months back there was a thread relating to the endmill sharpening machines which had become available. Some purchased them with them receiving good reviews, but unfortunately, they are too expensive for most to purchase. Those readers may like to take a look at my most recent video showing a simple device for accurately sharpening the end cutting edges. A link to it can be found on this page.

It can also sharpen Slot Drills with a very slight adjustment to their form.

I will add that this device, that can be made in a few hours, has not been produced in response to the recent thread as it was first published in issue 170 (2010) of MEW.

When I added the thread regarding my QCTH's I said that I would not be adding to the forum every video that I published. I have therefore 8 videos now available for viewing, links to these can be found in an index just for the videos

I will though mention one which has had particularly good responses on other forum, that is, my Full Function Dividing Head. This can be found here

          Harold,

Tried both links to the endmill sharpener video, but each time got a "no video found" response from youtube.

All the links for the other videos worked OK

          Phil

PS – so I'll dig out MEW 170 from the mag store and read it in bed!

While Harold has some very interesting and effective solutions to many problems, I might ask of any comments on another sharpening system Eccentic's Acute system? Any good? I know it might look expensive, and challenging to make, to some …. but does it work?

There's a bit of a build log on here by John Ashton and a detailed write up in MEW.

First, thanks ASF for embedding my video into this thread, I will though explain the error I made.

Unfortunately, I had wrongly programmed the links on the two pages quoted with the address to the video page for editing it, obviously, this needed a password to gain access

If you now go to my webpage the link on it is now programmed with the correct address.

                  Sorry for the error

If you have suitable collets and a collet block it should be possible to cut down on the parts to be made at the expense of having to modify the support to suit. If you have a hex collet block you can sharpen three flute end mills as well.

As ever Harold you come up with practical and innovative engineering solutions.

                      Many thanks for sharing.

I am returning to the subject of this thread to correct a misconception about its use that a very small number of readers have. However, with the sharpening fixture getting a mention on a number of forums, they may not be from this forum, I have no quick way of telling.

A few have told me that they have, or intend to, make the jig and then use it on one of my grinding rests. The situation here is that having one of the grinding rests there is no reason to make the jig, only the square holder for the end mill.

The method is to use the fence to guide the cutter holder and the tables feed to set the amount ground off, aided by the stop at the end of the fence. Anyone having my Tool and Cutter Sharpening" book can see this on page 53.

Incidentally, with one exception (my full function dividing head) the sharpening jig is the most viewed of all of my videos with about 5000 visits, and my web site stats showing the drawings for it being the most viewed drawings. This being my reason for trying to avoid anyone making something that they do not need to.

I will be publishing some videos showing my grinding rests being used, with five already finished, but am delaying this until the rest of the videos, now finished, are made public.

                        Harold
