I'm referring specifically to ebay – yesterday my Sulphuric acid arrived, no less than 96 molar (% and molarity are virtually the same for this), this stuff will dissolve human tissue for fun in an instant, through the post in a plastic bottle no less. For under £30 you can make yourself well over 5kg of gunpowder, using the very finest refined chemicals. Its a wonder we don't have a lot more terror attacks than we do.

+ 1 Remember i stopped smoking Stoptober ? Well, I was on the Vaping forum and these dudes make their own juice..and there's a link to a chemical site, for glycol and poly whateveritis …£3 a gallon..each , £3 for flavours .£3 for nicotine… Ah, but for nicotine only over 18 !!! Further looking..Nitric ,sulphuric ,hydrocloric acid ,all cheap a gallon.. caustic soda etc no mention of over 18 for those ! So a kid can buy it ,shove it in someones face ,but they cant get nicotine as it's addictive ??

I remember as a kid i felt really guilty asking for 1/2 a pint of Ether at the village chemist ! I only wanted to make model aeroplane diesel for my P.A.W. 1 1/2cc as the model shop was miles away and we were really rural ! ..And the old boy made me sign a poison book for it, I was about 10 !

Some drain cleaners are over 90% sulphuric acid! just need to be over 21 to purchase it and you can then leave it under the sink till you need it!!! Who needs terror attacks when that's lurking under the sink.

No need for eBay, I bought a bottle of drain cleaner from my local hardware store a couple of weeks ago. It says on the bottle it's 95-97% Sulphuric acid. About £5 for a litre bottle wrapped in a plastic bag.

I can vouch that Bakers Fluid is an acquired taste but I would put whisky in the same class. Read the Amazon reviews of Barrentine meths for a good laugh.

Try shellac varnish. I got a mouthful of the stuff once trying to coat the inside of a stainless steel tube. OK, shellac is not poisonous (it is in fact edible and used for coating food and pills) but it is dissolved in meths. You get a mouth full of the stuff and the shellac comes out of solution as a horrible mucus gunge when it meets one's saliva. Utterly disgusting.

Before anyone points it out, meths is poisonous.

Many years ago I witnessed 2 men sitting at a table in a Brighton pub with half empty pint beer glasses top them up with Meths after a furtive look around to see if they were being watched. I knew it was Meths as it was poured out of a blue can sold by Boots chemists in those days. The mix went pink just like Shells “Aladdin Pink” paraffin.

Siphoning petrol (It was mine, not a misspent youth) I got a taste of it. Never have I tasted anything so foul! Even including Fennings Fever Cure, which turned out to contain nitric acid…

ky that your mistake only led to tasting it. Had you sucked it into your respiratory tracts the results may well have hospitalised you as a serious case, or worse!

All these terrible things are nowhere near as deadly as the motor car which is still killing about 3000 per year. Selling ether to a responsible 10 year old does not seem to be anywhere near as dangerous as the way that driving licences (and mobile phones) are handed out almost willy-nilly to some of the idiots on our roads.

Asking a ten year old to sign a poison book sounds like very good education: it it clearly stuck with you, and may have helped you become a responsible person who can handle dangerous substances. May even have saved your life.

Perhaps we could do something like that with some 'adults' who buy things like fireworks or other dangerous products (including myself and sharp objects like end mills – blood does SO spoil the surface finish).

Perhaps what needs pointing out in the above exchange is that a fair amount of this dangerous stuff being sold on eBay IS illegal to sell in this way and should be reported. Although it might be worth considering that it may not be what it says it is: no one is going to report to trading standards that their illegally purchased acid is not full strength.

Anything dubious through the post really should be reported to Royal Mail out of respect for their workers, who would be in the front line if anything went wrong. They can can enforce pretty extreme sanctions on businesses and individuals, I understand.

Quite, Brian. Perhaps I should have made it clearer that it is cars and their drivers which kill people. Cars parked on the drive never seem to get into trouble.

Perhaps as this topic has been done to death anyway I'll add my 2 cents. Strictly speaking it is almost impossible to obtain 'Methylated Spirits' these days. Originally meths was ethanol plus methanol. The addition had 2 purposes, methanol has a disgusing taste making the mixture almost undrinkable and, because it was supposedly undrinkable fuilfilled the requirements of Custome & Excise (now HMRC) to not be classified as dutiable spirits

It is now normal to add 'Bitrex' rather than methanol.

I can get "meths " easily enough , but it does it stink these days . Nothing like the stuff we bought for Mamods years ago . The smell lingers long after it's evaporated . I know why now .

Beg pardon sirs – it might look like that, but it aint.

It is indeed over 90%, but it consists of 90% of diluted sulphuric of unknown dilution. It is not conc sulphuric.
If you buy the real stuff (93% from Blackgates?) and dilute it to, say 15%, it will perform much better than drain cleaner with the same dilution. So if you do buy drain cleaner – just dilute it less – I found you need over 30% to achieve the same. I wonder what the other 10% is?
