I don’t think that’s true, Bernard. At least not if you check eligibility on the government web site. There it merely states that you, as the licence holder must be 75 or over and be in receipt of pension credit.  Consider the (admittedly unlikely) situation of a 76 year old man married to a 35 year old lady and he is in receipt of pension credit.  He would be the licence holder and eligible for a free licence.  Not that I expect that they would be watching much television!

I received two separate messages for Paypal today. Apparently.

The sending addresses looked genuine (no peculiar spelling or punctuation).

‘View Source’ suggested nothing untoward (no weird secondary addresses).

Each said one of my cards, one debit the other credit, was about to expire, and quoted the final four digits of each.

Now, could it be real? Neither of my present card numbers end with the given digits. I still have my previous credit-card, cancelled and not yet cut up for workshop shims: no match there either.

Yet I use PayPal so rarely it is possible the numbers it knows were of previous cards.

 

I still took the safe way out by reporting them.

(My portable ‘phone will need topping-up soon, and I may need register a new card to it because I last topped it up at least two years ago. Last time, I found it difficult because I had changed cards so may need the O2 shop’s help.)

Yep, that is correct, and we qualify on both counts.

A couple of months before wife was going to be 75, I transferred it into her name, so we got it a year earlier, as the wife is a year and four months older than I, terrible cheats aren’t we….

Not quite right I’m afraid, as I’ve posted elsewhere the wife is a year and four long months older than me, so before her 75th I transferred the TV License to her name, we are in receipt of pension credit also, as I don’t get a full pension….

Have just received an E mail from someone, SUPPOSEDLY “@ sky”, inviting me to update my mailbox.

Since I have no dealings with Sky, it looks very like an attempt at phishing, so has been deleted from Trash.

Suggest that do likewise, and warn all your contacts

From https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility you only get penson credit if any partner is also over UK penson age or one of you gets housing benefit. So at least 75 and 66 or 75 and on housing benefit to get free TV licence.

I have just had confirmation of my direct debit set up for the TV licence which has actually been in place for decades. They invite me to ‘logon’ to ‘activate’ my licence and give them my email address. I count this as phishing to add my email  to their list of saleable data.
