Having just acquired a Myford Super 7 the need has arisen to remove the cross slide. My knowledge of Myford lathes is very limited. I have no manual or tools with the machine. What, if any are the pitfalls when removing the cross slide as the machine has power cross feed. I do not really want bits falling into the apron, which might require dismantling to retrieve them. Doing the job holds no terrors for me, or should it?

You should find some answers in this recent thread:- Myford Super 7 – Powered Crossfeed

Thanks Norman I just needed a point in the right direction, job done. Cross slide will go on the surface grinder and be cleaned up and look like new. I know it will end up being a full refurb job which was not what I intended. I suppose that way I will get to know the lathe.

Refitting the cross slide to can be a little tricky, I'm sure Myfords describe the correct procedure but I found that by engaging the cross feed knob, winding in the feedscrew until resistance is felt and then manipulating the leadscrew handwheel and cross feed together, the slide goes on without any problems. No force necessary, you can feel the feedscrew engage the key and then wind it in with the lead screw hand wheel. Place the gearbox in neutral or disengage the banjo for non gearbox machines.

                Dusty,

Please obtain a copy of the Myford Super 7 manual as it is very comprehensive and informative. Free PDFs are available on line.
