So I recently acquired my first ever machine tool, the Adept No 2 hand powered shaper. It seems in okay shape, so after having filed up some missing gibs, and made the missing handle, I am now looking to start tooling up.

What sort of vise would you reccoment for the shaper? I was thinking of going for one of the precision tool vises, such as **LINK** but that seems a little overkill for a machine that will generate hardly any cutting forces, and I doubt has the precision to match the vise tolerances.

I found **LINK** while browsing, and it looks like the perfect economic option if I can fit it on the table — anybody has any experience with these?

      Thanks for any advise

          DP,

My Adept No2 came from an auction as a rusty pile of bits for £4! Sadly it didn't have the table or a vice. I rebuilt it and bought an angle plate from Chronos which I modified and fitted a tounge to to engage in the central slot for alignment and at the same time I bought a swivel jaw vice from the same source. It's been fine and the swivel jaw has allowed holding some irregular shaped parts quite nicely. I think the total cost was around £60 for both parts. I made the new hand wheel for the tool slide and divided the divisions in the lathe using an appropriate change wheel and a vee tool sideways to engrave it. For a total cost of under £80 including paint and sundries it has done me very well. I would still like to find an original table but not sweating if I don't find one!

Paul's vice looks a good option if you can find one, Two points for both of you. a) fit a large thick washer under that hold down bolt to distribute the load, filing off a bit where it is close to the main body. b) have a look at pictures of the Drummond hand shaper. It uses a similar rounded moving jaw but also has a hold down bolt in the middle that might be an useful addition.
I find that a sensible cut is about 20sq thou. That is eg 4 thou across by 5 depth per stroke. If you try to be a tough guy the shock of the first contact can move the work.

Paul, I wish I could say i got it for such a good price — it looks in very good condition. I like the vise, but i'm a bit worried that the vise jaws are not hardened — i'd think they'd get dinged up very quickly, and lose any value as a reference surface.

Bazyle, I'm glad to hear about the sensible cut — I've read in other threads people being limited to much lighter, so that's a pleasant suprise.
