Greetings, can anyone advise me if ME or MEW have ever published information on using ER32 collets in a Quorn cutter grinder?

      Regards

      Brian

I'm not aware of any published articles, but I made an ER20 collet holder for my Quorn to fit in the 1" dia. holder.I've not really used it much, but it seems OK.

I'd wonder if an ER32 chuck might be on the large side for the machine and restrict range of adjustment unless for a particular task.

            Hi Brian,

When I made my Tool/cutter Grinder, I turned the hole through the tool-holder to 25mm (not 1" ) so I could use an ER 32 collet chuck with a straight 25mm shank, something like this. Since I already had some MT 2 finger collets I also bought one of these, only mine is 25mm outer diameter. So if you can find an ER 32 chuck with 1" outer diameter it should fit a standard Quorn.

There are some long and compendious memories on this site but the best answer to this kind of question is one or other of the various indexes – or even a search from the google box on the home page.

I use ER collets on my Quorn but ER32 sounds rather big for this.

PS I just tried to search on "quorn er32" and got a hit.

                HI,

I use an ER20 on my Quorn – its great for sharpening drills because it caters for all sizes, I machined a suitable end to take a ball-bearing nut on an R8 blank to fit my machine.

I agree about ER32 probably being too large.

I inherited my Quorn from my dd who used 3C collets, with only a limited set. When I got my VMB that uses R8 collets I looked at the possibility of making a mandrel to take these (since by definition I had a set of collets to take all the milling cutters I used) but decided there just wasn't enough meat in the casting to allow it to be bored out. So I bit the bullet and made a new workhead out of a chunk of concast iron from CES.

You could take the same approach if you want a project? Also worth looking over on the Quorn-Owners group where there quite a few posts about alternative collets. Worth joining (it's free).

Many thanks for the informative answers to my question, which I had already tried to find an answer from the various indexes that I have, but I wondered if ME or MEW had covered it.

The current castings suppliers make mention of it, and produce within a full drawing pack, a drawing of, I think, a suitable holder.

                    Thank you again.

                    regards

                    Brian

Not ER32, but Martin Models, in the States, do R8/5C workhead castings and drawings. I have a set maturing in the box with the rest of the Quorn bits…

This is an old thread update comment.

If it is of any help I have just sourced (with help from John at NYC CNC) a 1" diameter shaft ER25 collet extension from Maritool in the US. They also make an ER32 version. It arrived this morning and fits like a glove into the Quorn mount. The only negative was that the delivery charge was similar to the cost of the collet extension. If you have friends and family in the US you might improve on this.

Next job in the upgrade is to ease the frustration of the multitude of interfering ball levers by replacing them with locking arm equivalents.
