Polishing / Tumbler medium

I have a few small parts that I would like to polish. In this case they are rockers for an IC engine made from key steel. (basically en8)

I have seen on the net a video of somebody putting small parts into a glass jar along with some medium and turning / tumbling in a lathe by fixing the metal lid of said jar into the lathe chuck to polish them.

But I don't have any tumbling medium and neither will I want to do this on a regular basis. – So is there a 'house hold'' substitute that will do the job.? I realise this will take longer that using proper medium.

I did consider perhaps using uncooked rice but this is probably far, far to soft.

Walnut shells will polish the partys but if there are any machining marks then something a bit more abrasive first may speed things up try a fine sand.

You can probably get the gem stone polishiong mediums cheap off e-bay

Walnut shells and/or crushed Apricot stones are often recommended.
